A dismissive remark about Tiger Woods’ recent DUI arrest has reportedly sparked tensions between the golf legend and his girlfriend Vanessa Trump, (ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr.) adding a personal dimension to one of the most troubling chapters in the athlete’s storied career.
The 15-time major champion faces misdemeanor driving under the influence charges with property damage after crashing his Land Rover (some sources say Range Rover) on Jupiter Island, Florida, on March 27, 2026. Woods was attempting to pass a pressure cleaner truck on a narrow two-lane road when he clipped the back of the trailer, causing his SUV to flip onto its side. He crawled out of the passenger window uninjured.
While Woods blew triple-zeroes on a breathalyzer test, deputies from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office observed lethargic movements, bloodshot eyes, and dilated pupils. Two hydrocodone pills were found in Woods’ pocket during the arrest. The golf icon told officers he takes prescription medications, stating, “I take a few” when questioned.
Bodycam footage shows Woods struggling through field sobriety exercises while sitting down—an accommodation made for his extensive physical injuries, including seven back surgeries and over 20 operations on his leg from a devastating 2021 wreck. His ankle remains fused, and he walks with a noticeable limp.
Woods told police he was “looking down at my phone and changing the radio station” before the crash. He also mentioned speaking with President Donald Trump, telling a deputy, “I was just talking to the president,” as officers approached.
The 50-year-old golfer refused to submit to a urinalysis test and has pleaded not guilty to both the DUI charge and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He also received a careless driving citation carrying a $163 fine.
“Based on my observations of Woods, how he performed the exercises and based on my training, knowledge, and experience, I believed that Woods normal faculties were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle,” an officer wrote in a report.
Two mugshots tell the story of Woods’ ordeal. The first showed him in a blue polo with bloodshot eyes. A second, more somber image depicted Woods in a blue inmate top, stone-faced with disheveled hair after processing at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident marks a devastating setback for Woods, whose first return to competitive golf since the 2024 British Open had concluded just days earlier. He competed with Jupiter Links Golf Club in the TGL finals, the innovative indoor golf league he helped create. The appearance followed back surgery in October 2025, adding to his already extensive medical history.
Woods announced on March 31 that he would be “stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.” A judge granted approval for him to seek treatment outside the United States due to privacy concerns. His private jet was tracked landing in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday morning—home to exclusive treatment centers known for their discretion.
The golf icon will not play in the upcoming Masters tournament. Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley confirmed the news, stating the club “fully support[s] Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being.” Woods has also formally declined to serve as U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland—decisions that underscore the seriousness of his situation.
Vanessa Trump has publicly stood by Woods’ side. She posted a supportive photo on Instagram Friday with the caption “love you” and heart emojis, projecting solidarity amid the crisis.
However, sources paint a more complicated picture behind the scenes. According to the Daily Mail, tensions emerged when Trump tried to address the situation together with Woods. “She has gone from concern to anger,” one insider said, claiming Woods dismissed her concerns by insisting everything was “under control.” Some sources describe the couple arguing throughout the weekend, while others insist there has been “no fighting” and “no talks of breaking up.”
Trump reportedly expressed frustration because Woods sometimes drives her and her five children. This crash adds to a troubling pattern: a 2009 accident, a 2017 DUI arrest involving prescription drugs, and a near-fatal rollover in California in 2021 that left doctors considering amputation of his leg.
Former sports reporter Michele Tafoya commented on Fox News that Woods “needs help”—a sentiment echoing what many observers are thinking.
President Trump, who called Woods a “very close friend,” weighed in following the arrest: “He lives a life of pain. He has a lot of pain. He doesn’t have an alcohol problem, but he does have pain.” Trump expressed confidence Woods would be “terrific” after completing treatment.
His next court date is scheduled for May 5, and he is not required to attend in person.
Vanessa has five children with her former husband, Donald Trump Jr., including 18-year-old golfer Kai Trump. She is said to have met Woods through Florida’s golf community.
For an athlete who has battled back from career-threatening injuries multiple times, this crisis presents challenges extending far beyond the golf course. Woods must now navigate the legal system, complete treatment, and repair strained personal relationships while his professional future hangs in the balance.
