Trump, 79, Erupts at Female Reporter

On March 31, 2026, President Donald Trump verbally attacked a female journalist, referring to NewsNation White House Correspondent Libbey Dean as a “fresh person” and stating “we’ve had a lot of problems with you,” in a heated Oval Office interaction. The president’s tirade occurred while he answered queries regarding military actions in Iran after signing an executive order concerning mail-in voting.

The altercation began when Dean tried to inquire whether Iran needed to negotiate with the United States to stop military actions and whether Trump had communicated personally with Iranian leaders. When Trump started responding that no agreement was required, Dean interrupted to make her question clearer, prompting the president to lose his temper.

“Wait a minute. Do you want me to answer the question? You’re a fresh person. You know? We’ve had a lot of problems with you, haven’t we?” Trump said.

This episode represents another confrontation between Trump and women reporters. In November, the president told Bloomberg White House Correspondent Catherine Lucey, “Quiet, piggy,” when she inquired about the Epstein files. In mid-March, he described an ABC reporter as a “very obnoxious person” for questioning him about troop deployments. Male journalists seldom receive comparable treatment, though Trump did tell a male Newsmax reporter last week that he was “not doing a very good job.”

The Tuesday interaction started with Dean inquiring about gas prices reaching $4.00 during the Iran conflict. Trump continually interrupted her efforts to finish her questions, maintaining that Americans felt “a lot safer” despite the economic consequences. When Dean continued attempting to redirect him to her initial question about whether a deal was required to end operations, Trump’s anger exploded.

Following his criticism of Dean, Trump proceeded with his response. He declared that Iran doesn’t have to make a deal, and that the U.S. would leave “when we feel that they are for a long period of time, put into the Stone Ages, and they won’t be able to come up with a nuclear weapon.” A deal, he said, was “irrelevant.”

The White House Rapid Response team applauded the confrontation on social media, publishing “@POTUS nukes a rude @LibbeyDean_ after being interrupted.” The messaging presented Trump as protecting himself against a discourteous journalist rather than addressing the substance of her questions about U.S. military operations in Iran.

Trump dedicated roughly 30 minutes answering questions from reporters following the executive order signing aimed at mail-in voting, a method Trump himself used in a Florida election last week. The president characterized the order as “foolproof,” though election experts called it unconstitutional. Trump rejected possible legal challenges, saying only “rogue judges” and “very bad judges” would block it.

Throughout the extensive press availability, Trump also discussed the continuing Iran conflict, declaring that military operations would finish within two to three weeks (two weeks being Trump’s favorite time period). The president delivered a primetime address to the nation on Wednesday night about the war which began Feb. 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iran, assassinating Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials. Iran has since retaliated with strikes on U.S. bases, allied countries, and commercial shipping—including a recent attack on a Kuwaiti oil tanker off Dubai.

Trump shifted from the Iran discussion to attack the media more broadly, claiming the press had lost credibility with the American public. He argued that winning in a “landslide” despite receiving “93 to 97 percent” negative coverage proved that “people don’t believe the press,” something he called “a very bad thing for our country.”

The sequence of Trump’s confrontations with female media figures has drawn increasing scrutiny. Just a week after the Dean incident, Trump took to Truth Social on April 6 to demand that Fox News fire “The Five” liberal panelist Jessica Tarlov, calling her “one of the worst ‘personalities’ on television, a real loser.” He also criticized Fox News Sunday anchor Shannon Bream in the same post, accusing her of failing to push back on Democratic guests. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said Trump’s attacks have “nothing to do with gender” and “everything to do with the fact that the president’s and the public’s trust in the media is at an all-time low.”

Critics argue the president applies a double standard, tolerating or even praising aggressive questioning from male journalists while characterizing similar behavior from women as inappropriate or disrespectful. The Society of Professional Journalists called Trump’s treatment of female reporters “part of an unmistakable pattern of hostility” that “undermines the essential role of a free and independent press.”

Dean had also attempted to ask Trump about his plan to bring down gas prices and how the Iranian conflict affects ordinary Americans. Trump deflected most of her inquiries, instead focusing on stock market performance and his characterization of Iran’s new regime as “reasonable” and “accessible.”

The incident comes as Trump faces mounting pressure over the Iran intervention, rising gas prices, and his controversial executive order on voting restrictions. Democrats and voting rights groups have already filed lawsuits challenging the mail-in voting order, setting up another legal battle for the administration.
