Trump Health Report Rocks White House

A White House health report confirming President Donald Trump’s diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency continues to draw scrutiny as the 79-year-old commander-in-chief approaches his 80th birthday on June 14. Medical experts have weighed in on the common but progressive vein condition that affects millions of Americans.

The diagnosis became public on July 17, 2025, after Trump experienced swelling in his legs, prompting diagnostic vascular studies and ultrasound examinations. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt disclosed the findings during a press briefing, describing the condition as “benign and common, particularly in individuals over the age of 70.”

Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, confirmed the diagnosis while emphasizing the president’s overall fitness. The medical memo stated there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease, and that Trump remains in excellent health.

Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when damaged valves in leg veins fail to properly push blood back toward the heart. Blood flows backward and pools in the lower extremities, creating pressure that leads to swelling, pain, skin changes, and potentially varicose veins. The condition affects an estimated 10 to 35 percent of American adults, with prevalence increasing significantly with age.

Dr. Cheng-Han Chen, a board-certified interventional cardiologist at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, described the initial warning signs: leg and ankle swelling, particularly after prolonged sitting or standing, along with a sensation of heaviness or aching in the legs.

The president’s condition garnered additional attention in September 2025 when observers at a Pentagon 9/11 memorial event noted that Trump’s face appeared droopy on the right side, sparking unfounded stroke rumors. Neither Trump nor White House officials confirmed any neurological issues. More recently, on March 2, 2026, a visible rash on Trump’s neck during a White House Medal of Honor ceremony prompted questions about his skin health.

Barbabella addressed the neck rash, explaining Trump was using “a very common cream” as a preventative skin treatment. The physician noted the redness would persist for a few weeks, but did not specify what condition the treatment aimed to prevent.

Bruising visible on the back of Trump’s hands has also drawn attention. Leavitt attributed this to frequent handshaking combined with Trump’s daily aspirin regimen, part of his cardiovascular prevention protocol. Trump has told reporters he takes a higher dose of aspirin than his doctors recommend, which contributes to easy bruising.

Medical experts emphasize that while chronic venous insufficiency requires ongoing management, it remains treatable through conservative measures. Standard treatment includes wearing compression stockings, elevating legs above heart level when resting, and maintaining regular physical activity. Trump, an avid golfer, engages in regular exercise that can help manage the condition—though he told The Wall Street Journal he tried compression socks but stopped because he didn’t like them.

Dr. Christopher Yi, a board-certified vascular surgeon at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, noted several risk factors for developing the condition, including advanced age, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged standing or sitting, family history, prior leg injuries or blood clots, pregnancy, and smoking.

If left untreated, chronic venous insufficiency can progress to more serious complications. Severe cases may develop venous ulcers—open sores that require extensive wound care and can significantly impact quality of life. However, Barbabella’s examination found no signs of heart failure, kidney problems, or systemic illness in the president.

Vice President JD Vance addressed concerns about Trump’s health in August 2025, praising the president’s stamina. “He’s the last person making phone calls at night, and he’s the first person who wakes up and the first person making phone calls in the morning,” Vance told USA Today.

Trump underwent additional diagnostic testing in October 2025, including a CT scan that Barbabella described as “perfectly normal.” The president initially told reporters he received an MRI before later clarifying it was a CT scan in a Wall Street Journal interview published January 1, 2026.

Medical professionals stress that chronic venous insufficiency, while progressive and requiring lifelong management, does not typically threaten longevity when properly treated. Approximately 25 million adults in the United States have some form of the condition, with rates climbing substantially among those over 70.

Beyond the vein condition, broader questions about the president’s physical and cognitive health accelerated in early 2026. A viral video of Trump walking with a noticeable limp on New Year’s Eve showed him dragging his right leg before adjusting his gait upon apparently noticing cameras. Questions about Trump’s cognitive sharpness have also grown, with the president occasionally appearing to drift off at public events and sometimes mixing up names and dates — including a January speech in Davos during which he repeatedly referred to Greenland as “Iceland.” Trump has denied falling asleep during White House meetings, telling The Wall Street Journal he was “resting his eyes” and insisted he has plenty of energy, crediting his health to genetics. The White House has continued to push back on all concerns, with Dr. Barbabella maintaining that the president has passed cognitive assessments and remains fully capable of carrying out his duties.

As Trump approaches his 80th birthday on June 14, 2026, his medical team continues monitoring his condition while maintaining that he remains fully capable of executing presidential duties. The White House has committed to transparency regarding the president’s health while managing public concerns about his ability to serve through the remainder of his term.
