Former President Joe Biden appeared confused on stage during the dedication ceremony for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on June 18, 2026, lingering alone near the podium and calling out for his granddaughter as other dignitaries departed.
The 83-year-old Biden was captured on video pulling down his sunglasses and peering into the crowd as former President Barack Obama walked off the stage during the star-studded event on Chicago’s South Side. After much of the ceremony had concluded, Biden remained near the podium, seemingly unaware that Obama and other guests had already moved away.
Left standing alone on stage, Biden was heard on the live microphone asking, “Where’s my granddaughter?” A person familiar with the situation subsequently told Fox News Digital that Biden was looking for his granddaughter, who was seated in the audience. According to Daily Mail lip-reader Nicola Hickling, Biden also appeared to ask “Where are the children?” before the granddaughter remark — though that portion was inaudible and rests entirely on the lip-reader’s visual interpretation. The footage showed him taking off his glasses and staring at the crowd before he began walking off stage and the clip ended.
The moment drew widespread discussion online during the dedication ceremony, which brought together former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Biden, and Obama for the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also attended the gathering.
Video from the ceremony showed Obama leaving the stage to upbeat music — at one point playing air guitar — followed by a smiling former First Lady Jill Biden, with neither appearing to notice that Joe Biden remained behind. Additional video captured Biden appearing to seek direction as guests and performers moved around the stage, until Jill Biden returned to assist him. The ceremony featured performances by Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bono, John Legend, and Christina Aguilera.
Despite the awkward moment, Obama praised his former vice president during the ceremony, telling the crowd, “To Joe and Jill, thank you for being on this journey with us,” and thanking the assembled former leaders for “your friendship, counsel, and devotion to this country.”
The appearance marked one of Biden’s most visible public outings in recent months. He has largely stayed away from the spotlight since leaving the White House as the oldest president in U.S. history, and continues treatment for stage-four prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.
The Obama Center opening came the same week The New Yorker Radio Hour released a podcast interview — recorded June 16, 2026, at New York’s 92nd Street Y — in which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Biden’s decision to seek reelection in 2024. Clinton said it was a “terrible miscalculation” on Biden’s part, arguing that if he had passed the torch, the Democratic Party would have had a competitive contest.
“Very sadly, I believe whoever emerged from that contest, whether it was the vice president or a governor or a senator or anybody else, would have beaten Donald Trump,” Clinton said. She described Biden’s decision to remain in the race as a mistake for himself, his legacy, and the country, leaving the party in a difficult position once he ultimately withdrew.
The opening ceremony, held in John Lewis Plaza, drew celebrities, musicians, and former world leaders to Chicago’s South Side for the dedication of the center, which serves as a tribute to Obama’s eight years in office.
The moment renewed scrutiny that has followed Biden since his 2024 debate performance against Trump, after which leading Democrats pressed him to exit the race weeks later. He was replaced atop the ticket by Harris, who lost to Trump in November.
