Mass Shooting at Welfare Facility Leaves 6 Dead

A 45-year-old man embroiled in a custody dispute over his infant daughter opened fire at a youth welfare facility in Stade, Germany, on June 29, killing six staff members in what authorities described as an extremely cold-blooded attack with no political motive. The suspect, a Turkish national born in Germany and living in the Hanover area, had a scheduled appointment at the center — with many of the people he would go on to kill.

The shooting unfolded around 12:10 local time at the facility on Dankersstrasse, a street south of Stade’s town center. The building provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children. Four women and two men — all employees — were gunned down during the assault. Five victims died at the scene; a sixth succumbed to injuries later in hospital. Several others were wounded, some of them seriously. The suspect’s three-month-old daughter and her 34-year-old mother were inside the building at the time but escaped unharmed.

A Custody Battle Turned Deadly

Investigators moved quickly to establish a motive. The suspect had an appointment at the welfare center to discuss custody arrangements for his daughter. Police believe the massacre grew directly out of that dispute. A spokesperson for prosecutors described the event as an “extended family tragedy” with no signs of femicide or political dimension.

Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens confirmed the family-driven motive at a press conference, calling it “an act of violence carried out in an extremely cold-blooded manner.” Behrens said the attack appeared to have been “committed for family reasons.” Lueneburg Police Chief Kathrin Schuol added that the suspect had previously come to the attention of authorities “in relation to threats” but had not been flagged as a particularly dangerous individual. He did not hold a firearms licence.

Suspect Fled Before Being Stopped at Roadblock

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a car driven by a woman. One witness told Focus Online that officers shouted at the pair to stop and fired repeatedly at the vehicle. The chase ended when police intercepted a Mercedes with a blown-out tyre at a roadblock on a nearby country road. Officers ordered both occupants out and detained them face-down on the pavement. The suspected gunman and the woman who drove the vehicle were among those detained. Investigators believe she was a member of the suspect’s family or social circle. Police confirmed there were no other suspects at large and that the public faced no further danger.

A spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office said no arrest warrant had yet been issued for the main suspect as of Monday, noting that the decision would hinge on the outcome of further police investigation.

Schools Placed on Alert, Community in Shock

The welfare facility sits near a daycare center and a primary school. City Councillor Carsten Brokelmann said parents had collected their children from both sites after news of the shooting spread. Brokelmann said in a statement that the community was relieved staff and children at the daycare center and primary school were safe, thanking police officers for their efforts in the chaotic situation and expressing the community’s deepest sympathies to the victims and their families. Vitali Mertens, a resident who lives across the street from the facility, said he heard the gunshots and watched as emergency crews flooded the area almost immediately, telling reporters that “the whole area was cordoned off right away.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the attack “shocking to the core,” writing on social media that many people who had dedicated themselves to helping and protecting others had paid with their lives or their health. Police also urged the public to disregard inaccurate information spreading through social media and messaging apps in the hours after the shooting.

Rare Violence in a Quiet Northern City

Stade is a small city of roughly 50,000 residents located approximately 30 to 40 kilometers west of Hamburg. Germany maintains significantly more restrictive gun laws than the United States, and mass shootings remain rare within its borders. The scale and ferocity of the attack — six dead inside a facility designed to shelter vulnerable mothers and their newborns — made its impact all the more acute. Investigators continued their work as the country absorbed the weight of what Behrens called an act of extraordinary, deliberate violence carried out against people whose only purpose was to provide care.
