RFK Jr.’s CNN Meltdown Shocks Everyone

A grocery-store price check on national television has drawn a furious response from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. His target was CNN anchor Erin Burnett, and the venue was a lengthy post on X that went up on the night of Thursday, August 20, 2026. A day earlier, Wednesday’s edition of her program, “Erin Burnett OutFront,” had taken a budget recipe from his new cooking series to the checkout counter and come away with a total roughly 3.6 times the dollar figure he had promoted.

The dish in question was a plate of wild Alaskan salmon cakes with a white bean and green salad. Kennedy’s YouTube program “The Real Food Show” puts the cost of feeding a family of four at $19.64, or about $4.91 per person. Tom Foreman, a CNN correspondent, bought the same ingredients at a neighborhood supermarket and cooked the same meal. The register hit $70.54.

Kennedy, 72, was not amused. “Trump Derangement Syndrome has so debilitated @ErinBurnett that she has abandoned both common sense and basic arithmetic,” he wrote. His charge was that the network wanted the show to tally the entire package price of every ingredient, regardless of the small quantity a recipe actually uses. A single squirt of ketchup on a burger, he asked, does not get a restaurant patron billed for the whole bottle, does it?

Where the $5 Math Comes From

Bookkeeping explains the gap between the two totals. The show’s per-serving figures count only the portion of each ingredient a recipe calls for; the package a customer has to haul to the checkout carries a much bigger sticker price. Costing out recipes that way is the standard method, Foreman granted, but he said the reasoning falls apart the moment you walk into a supermarket.

“They’re only pricing parts of it, and grocery stores don’t sell things that way,” Foreman said.

The line items make the case. Wild-caught sockeye salmon was listed on the program at $8.99, while the least expensive fish of that kind Foreman could find rang up at $24.04 — a sale price, at that. The onion behind a single eight-cent serving of red onion cost $1.03 on its own. Avocado mayonnaise, put down at 40 cents in the recipe, came out of a jar priced at $11.19. How a shopper walks in with $20 and leaves with everything the recipe demands, Foreman said, was something he could not work out.

Leftovers, Kennedy counters, are the entire point. Kitchens should be taken back by Americans, he says, and shelves filled with quality staples that can stretch across many meals. Replies on X were not convinced: supermarkets do not sell ketchup by the squirt, several noted, and sockeye salmon hardly qualifies as a pantry item that keeps.

Another Price Check, Same Outcome

The arithmetic was being done elsewhere, too. The online cart of the grocery store closest to Washington Post columnist Monica Hesse received Kennedy’s ingredient list, entered item by item, with the cheapest option chosen at every turn. Her total came to $73.46 — a little over $18 per serving, close to four times what the show claimed.

From the Dietary Guidelines to YouTube

The series arrived on YouTube on July 30, with Kennedy traveling the country to cook alongside guest chefs. Viewers would learn how to put together healthy meals for under $5 a serving “whenever possible,” his department said. Chef Andrew Gruel joined Kennedy in the opening installment for “Crispy Salmon Cakes with Apple, White Bean & Green Salad” — the very dish now being scrutinized. Chef Robert Irvine was also slated for the early episodes.

As a complement to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans released in January, the show carries the same message: protein at the center of every meal, with full-fat dairy, vegetables, fruits and whole grains under the banner “Eat Real Food.” Critics who say the guidelines cost more than ultra-processed food are flatly mistaken, Kennedy said in an exclusive interview with USA TODAY in Washington before the premiere, pointing out that $12 to $14 is what a fast-food meal now runs and that a family can eat both better and cheaper at home. Cooking is a skill many Americans have lost, he said, and reacquainting them with it is part of his department’s job. Regular home cooking is done by more than half of men and close to three-quarters of women, according to a 2023 study published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition.

Sauerkraut travels with Kennedy everywhere, and he’s a devoted booster of fermented food. He told the paper the stash used to come with him into restaurants until the objections mounted. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yogurt turn up in the show’s recipes. Eggs, bacon, burgers, steaks and fish make up most of the two meals he cooks each day, and he says the stronger cook in the household is his wife, actress Cheryl Hines. Chronic childhood disease is the enemy his Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement says it is campaigning against, with environmental toxins, ultra-processed food and what he calls overmedicalization in its sights.
