Richard O’Sullivan, the crooked-smiling comic actor whose flatshare farce “Man About the House” became a touchstone of 1970s British television, died September 4, 2026, at 82.
He died shortly after 6 a.m. local time with his close family gathered around him at Brinsworth House in Twickenham, London, according to the charity. The Royal Variety Charity runs the home for retired performers, and a stroke in 2003 had brought him there. Neither a cause of death nor funeral arrangements have been announced.
In a statement, Giles Cooper, life-president of the Royal Variety, said O’Sullivan had brought “pure warmth, effortless wit, and unforgettable joy into millions of living rooms.” He added: “He will be sorely missed by us all at the Royal Variety Charity.”
His son, James O’Sullivan, paid a tribute of his own. “My dad was as funny and charming in real life as he appeared on our TV screens over the years,” James O’Sullivan said. Much of his father’s work came before he was born, he said, but the programs were repeated so often that he could see for himself the talent that had won the actor such affection. His father had been a doting grandfather to his children and a wonderful dad to him, he said, and he would miss him dearly.
From Child Actor to Leading Man
O’Sullivan was born in Chiswick, west London, on May 7, 1944, and was already a working professional at the age of eight, making his screen debut in the 1953 film “The Yellow Balloon.” In 1956 he appeared in “Raiders of the River,” the first serial the Children’s Film Foundation ever produced, and that same year he joined Sir Peter Hall’s staging of “Love’s Labour’s Lost” at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the house that would become the Royal Shakespeare Theatre five years later.
Teenage parts came next. He played a defiant final-year pupil opposite Max Bygraves and Donald Pleasence in the 1961 social drama “Spare the Rod,” and made two films with singer Sir Cliff Richard — “The Young Ones” in 1961 and “Wonderful Life” in 1964. In 1963 he played Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII in the epic “Cleopatra,” starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Comedy had taken over by the late 1960s, with credits that included “The Ronnie Barker Playhouse” in 1968, “The Galton and Simpson Comedy” the following year and the medical sitcom “Doctor at Large.”
The Flatshare That Pushed Boundaries
“Man About the House” turned him into a fixture of British television, running for six series on ITV from 1973 to 1976. Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke wrote it, casting O’Sullivan as student chef Robin Tripp, who shared a London flat with two unattached women: Paula Wilcox as Chrissy and Sally Thomsett as Jo.
The premise looked like a gamble at the time. Few series before it had placed a man under one roof with two women who were single. The risk lay less in the living arrangement itself than in the sexual inference it invited, a reading that could have seen the series written off as unfit for an evening slot.
The writers made that problem the engine of the show. Brian Murphy played the landlord downstairs, George Roper, with Yootha Joyce as his wife, Mildred; to head off their objections, Chrissy claimed the new flatmate was gay. Robin played along with the story, and the deception kept the series safely in a pre-watershed slot. The Ropers proved popular enough with viewers that the couple were handed a spin-off of their own.
Robin followed him into a second hit. “Robin’s Nest” aired for six series between 1977 and 1981. By then the character had qualified as a chef, moving in with girlfriend Vicky, a role taken by Tessa Wyatt, and opening a restaurant alongside her father, played by Tony Britton. ABC’s “Three’s Company,” a remake of “Man About the House,” modeled actor John Ritter’s Jack Tripper on Robin Tripp.
Highwaymen, Widowers and Golf
Between 1979 and 1982 he traded the kitchen for the saddle, taking the title role as the 18th-century highwayman in ITV’s period adventure “Dick Turpin.” Sitcom work resumed with “Me and My Girl,” a series that ran from 1984 to 1988. It gave him the part of a widower raising an adolescent daughter, and put him alongside Tim Brooke-Taylor, Joanne Ridley and Joan Sanderson.
He starred in 1991 in “Trouble in Mind” as a married psychiatrist in the grip of a mid-life crisis. Later came an appearance on “Noel’s House Party” and a starring role in “Holed,” a 1996 television satire set around a suburban golf club. That was his last acting job.
Later Years at Brinsworth House
On October 19, 2021, O’Sullivan and his friend and fellow resident Mike Yarwood planted a cherry tree on the Brinsworth House lawn for Queen Elizabeth II’s Green Canopy initiative, ahead of her Jubilee the following year. It was one of his final public appearances.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, met a group of former stage and screen performers on a festive visit to the home in December 2018, and he was one of them. He had a cup of tea in the residents’ bar when staff showed the duchess in. Asked whether he missed acting, he told her he did not.
James O’Sullivan also used his statement to thank the staff at Brinsworth House for 23 years of love, kindness and care, saying the team would always hold a special place in his heart.
He married twice — to Diana Terry in 1971 and to Christine Smart in the late 1980s — and both marriages ended in divorce, the second in 1994. He was in a relationship with his “Man About the House” co-star Sally Thomsett from 1973 to 1976, and with Tessa Wyatt, who played Vicky opposite him in “Robin’s Nest,” from 1978 to 1985. Wyatt is James’ mother.
James survives him, as do his daughter-in-law, Kate; his grandchildren, Nancy and Freddie; and his brother, John. In asking that its privacy be respected, the family also relayed thanks to the actor’s fans, whose support, the charity said, meant so much to him during a long and happy life.
