A Grammy-winning singer and songwriter whose deep, smoky voice reshaped what modern jazz vocals could sound like, Cassandra Wilson died on the morning of September 2, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi. She was 70.

Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard confirmed that Wilson died at her home in Jackson, Mississippi, according to reporting on September 3. The coroner’s confirmation did not include a cause of death. Wilson “transitioned peacefully at home, surrounded by family, close friends, and her manager,” Robert Torre, who managed her for 20 years, said in a statement to WBGO, the jazz radio station. Her relatives and close friends were asking for privacy as they grieved, he added.

Wilson began recording in the early 1980s and spent the decades that followed redrawing the boundaries of jazz singing, pulling blues, folk, country and pop songcraft into a sound anchored by her unmistakable low register. She won two Grammy Awards. Time magazine declared her America’s best singer in 2001, and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) handed her one of the field’s highest distinctions when it named her a Jazz Master in 2022.

From Jackson to the New York Jazz Scene

She was born Cassandra Marie Fowlkes in Jackson in 1955, the daughter of bassist Herman Fowlkes Jr., and was known by her first husband’s surname. Piano came first, in childhood; the guitar came later, and it would sit at the center of the spare, string-driven arrangements on her best-known records. After Murrah High School, she studied at Millsaps College as well as Jackson State University, where she took a degree in mass communications before setting her sights on a career in music.

Wilson landed in New York in the early 1980s and quickly found her way into a jazz community then crowded with young players hunting for a new vocabulary. She was a founding member of the M-Base Collective. She shared stages with jazz legends Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis, and she opened for Davis. Albums with fellow musicians Greg Osby and Marsalis followed, and she sang on Marsalis’ “Blood on the Fields,” which became the first jazz work ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

She ranked among jazz’s biggest draws by the 1980s and ’90s — a performer who could top a festival bill and still sound as though she were singing in a hushed, dimly lit club.

A Voice That Crossed Genres

Signing with Blue Note Records opened the stretch that would come to define her career. “Blue Light ’Til Dawn,” released in 1993, set the template: hushed, atmospheric production and a repertoire that refused to respect genre borders. Two years later, “New Moon Daughter” gave her a commercial breakthrough, moving more than 400,000 copies. The album also won her the 1997 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.

Her song choices did much of the work. Material by writers well outside the jazz repertoire came out sounding wholly hers — Joni Mitchell’s “Black Crow” on “Blue Light ’Til Dawn,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” and, on “New Moon Daughter,” a reading of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” that became one of her signatures. That reach across styles brought in listeners who might never have bought a jazz album, and it kept her recordings in rotation long after the albums carrying them had come and gone.

“Loverly” brought her a second Grammy in 2009, for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Touring remained a constant throughout: the JVC Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, had her on its bill in August 2003, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame drew her to New York for its 48th annual induction and awards gala in June 2017.

Mississippi Mourns a Native Daughter

In her home state, the news landed less like the death of a celebrity than the loss of a relative. Wilson “carried the sound, spirit and history of Mississippi with her wherever her music reached,” Jackson Mayor John Horhn said. The mayor went on to say the city had been deprived of an extraordinary native daughter, while the world had been deprived of a singular musical voice.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, also counted her among its members: she was initiated into the Beta Delta Omega chapter, chartered at Tougaloo College in 1934. On its official social media account, the sorority acknowledged her death. Condolences went to her family, her friends and the members of Beta Delta Omega, and the tribute described her life as one lived beautifully and boldly.

The NEA Jazz Master designation in 2022 placed her among the artists the federal government formally recognizes for their part in shaping American jazz — a late-career honor that fit one of the genre’s most influential modern vocalists. The jazz tradition was never a museum piece in Wilson’s hands. She treated it instead as a living language, one flexible enough to hold a Mississippi childhood, a folk-rock ballad and a Blue Note session in the same breath.

Musician Jon Batiste paid tribute to Wilson on social media in remarks reported September 3, writing, “I learned so much from her, and I am so sad she has passed away.” He added: “She had an unmistakable vocal tone, phrasing, and her approach of weaving folkloric, R&B, and diasporic music together with experimental and popular genres had a major impact on me.” He also wrote: “She sounded like the South.”

Arrangements have since been set. Collins Northside Chapel in Jackson will host a visitation and an Ivy Beyond the Wall service, the Alpha Kappa Alpha memorial rite, on September 10, with a celebration of life to follow on September 11 at Jackson State University’s Rose E. McCoy Auditorium.
