Fans crowded the sidewalk outside the Hotel Le Royal Monceau on August 28, 2026, waiting for Celine Dion, and the Canadian singer behind “My Heart Will Go On” landed in Paris to find them there.
Both hands pressed to her chest, Dion, 58, appeared overcome as she stepped toward the cheering crowd and sent kisses into the throng. Over a black top she wore a beige double-breasted trench coat, ruffles draping at the sides, with black cutout heeled boots and oversized dark sunglasses, and she beamed as photographers closed in.
Glimpses of her in public had grown scarce, which is what gave the reunion its weight. On July 26, 2024, the five-time Grammy winner sang French singer Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” while perched on the Eiffel Tower as the Paris Olympics were formally opened, and for two years that performance stood as her defining return to a stage.
She has been out among fans again since. On September 1, Dion sang and danced for admirers outside her Paris hotel, wearing a black dress. On September 2, with her residency approaching, photographers captured her heading back into the hotel after dancing in the street.
Back in Paris After Nearly Two Years
A fashion show honoring the 45-year career of Lebanese designer Elie Saab, staged as part of Riyadh Season in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was the setting for her previous official public outing: she sang there on November 13, 2024. In the months that followed she turned up mostly as a spectator, spotted in the crowd at Paul McCartney and Coldplay concerts.
Paris feels like a second home, Dion told French broadcaster BFMTV ahead of the residency, and the support she has found there has never wavered. “I am ready, and I’m a bit uptight, of course, because it’s been a long time,” she told BFMTV. Her opening number stayed under wraps: asked to name it, she declined, saying it was a secret.
Living With Stiff Person Syndrome
Doctors had identified stiff person syndrome as the cause of her health troubles, Dion told the public in December 2022. The condition is an uncommon, progressive and incurable neurological autoimmune disorder that locks the muscles and brings on violent spasms, and it affects one or two people out of every million. A sudden movement, a loud noise or stress can set off an episode. What causes it, doctors have not pinned down. No drug aimed at the disorder itself has been cleared by regulators, though its symptoms can be eased by other therapies.
Symptoms had dogged her for 17 years before her formal diagnosis in 2022, Dion disclosed in an August 2026 Harper’s Bazaar profile. The pain started flaring in 2020, she told the magazine, and worsened to the point that walking was sometimes beyond her; at times she needed a high dose of Valium to function. When she pulled out of a show before the diagnosis, the reasons she gave masked how much she was suffering — often a cough, or a sinus infection. Those excuses, she said, made her feel like a liar in front of the very fans whose support would later pay for her extensive treatment.
Progressive is the word she uses for the condition; disease is the one she balks at. Medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy make up her recovery regimen. Ballet classes twice a week and 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week round it out. Jazmine Hughes, who profiled Dion for the magazine, wrote that the singer is rarely still, keeping in motion out of wariness that staying put too long will lock her up again.
Her recovery and her ability to perform again amount to a miracle she refuses to take for granted, Dion says. She said she is feeling strong, excited and a little nervous, but ready. “It’s been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I’ve missed them,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. Prime Video was where the toll the disorder took on her reached viewers: “I Am: Celine Dion,” her documentary on the subject, premiered June 25, 2024.
Inside the 26-Show Paris Residency
Nanterre, a western suburb of the capital, hosts the opening night on September 12, at the Plenitude Arena, formerly Paris La Défense Arena. It now numbers 26 concerts stretching to May 29, 2027, a run set to play from September to October, with additional shows slated for 2027.
A video message broadcast at the Eiffel Tower carried the announcement on March 30, her 58th birthday, with Dion telling fans she was managing her health and feeling good and calling the chance to perform for them the best birthday gift of her life. Demand was immense: a lottery for early access to tickets drew more than nine million fans. Six more dates arrived on April 7, which brought the fall tally to 16 shows across September and October; 10 additional concerts were scheduled afterward for May 2027.
Not since the Courage World Tour ended in 2020 has she played a regular run of performances. After her diagnosis she canceled the tour’s remaining dates, and severe, persistent muscle spasms forced a planned 2021 Las Vegas residency to be postponed and then scrapped.
Her catalog, meanwhile, had a Broadway life of its own this year. The St. James Theater is where “Titaníque,” the parody musical that fuses Dion’s songs with the 1997 film “Titanic,” opened in April 2026, and four 2026 Tony nominations followed, best musical and best book of a musical among them. A nomination for best actress in a musical went to Co-creator Marla Mindelle for her turn as a fictionalized Dion, while best featured actor in a musical brought a nod for actor Layton Williams. The production does not involve Dion.
