Memphis professional wrestling has lost one of its most influential figures: “Superstar” Bill Dundee died at 82 on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at approximately 3:30 a.m., according to his son, wrestler Jamie Dundee, who announced the death. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.

Jamie Dundee posted the news on Facebook and signed his message “Bill’s Boy.” Conrad Thompson reported the death that Sunday morning. Dundee’s family put the death at around 3:20 a.m. in a confirmation to Memphis Wrestling, a time that sits minutes apart from the one given by his son.

A Televised Tribute in His Final Days

Memphis Wrestling turned a full segment of one episode over to Dundee’s career. Accounts of the air date differ: Memphis Wrestling announced a September 6 broadcast, while other reports place the tribute on the September 5 episode. At the WrestleCenter, the promotion’s current roster emerged from the locker room and lined up to shake his hand.

Memphis Wrestling owner and announcer Dustin Starr handled the introduction, looking back on the years Dundee spent main eventing against his longtime rival Jerry “The King” Lawler for the Southern Heavyweight Championship. Dundee signed a title belt and did a meet-and-greet. “He had a five-minute standing ovation,” Starr said. The broadcast also noted that his influence reached generations of talent across Memphis Wrestling, the USWA, Power Pro Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

On August 21, about two weeks before his death and despite his declining health, Dundee turned out to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with Lawler, “Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart, King Cobra, and Shane Russell. “‘Superstar’ helped define an era of Memphis Wrestling that will never be duplicated,” Memphis Wrestling officials said.

The Lawler Rivalry That Built a Territory

No account of Dundee’s career works without Lawler in it. For decades the two swung back and forth between bitter enemies and successful partners. The Mid-South Coliseum hosted their headline bouts through a string of programs that included several Loser Leaves Town stipulations, and in 1977 their rivalry leaned on the sort of over-the-top stipulations that became a hallmark of the territory: in one match Lawler put his hair on the line against the hair of Dundee’s wife, and Dundee took Lawler’s prized Cadillac home after another.

Then the two would turn around and win together, capturing the AWA World Tag Team Championship twice in 1987. On his own, Dundee was a nine-time AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion and piled up numerous tag team titles across his years in Tennessee — all while billed at roughly 5-foot-7, undersized on paper and a perennial main eventer anyway. He also feuded regularly with fellow star Jimmy Valiant.

From Trapeze Artist to Memphis Mainstay

Born William Cruickshanks in Scotland on October 24, 1943, he spent his childhood in Australia. The big top brought him to wrestling: a circus took him on at 16 as a trapeze artist, and he became a wrestler in 1962. More than a decade of work in Australia followed. He relocated to the United States in 1974, the Memphis territory took him in that year, and WMC television carried him alongside longtime broadcasters Dave Brown and Lance Russell.

His value to the territory reached well past his matches. He took on booking duties in Memphis, and promoter Bill Watts’ Mid-South Wrestling later employed him during the mid-1980s. In the ring, he had runs with Jim Crockett Promotions, the CWA, the USWA, Power Pro Wrestling and WCW, and in the 1990s WCW cast him as “Sir William,” the manager of Lord Steven Regal. A contract dispute cut that WCW stint short. A former CWA International Heavyweight Champion, Dundee believed WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker blocked a potential WWE hiring.

Health Struggles and a Long Farewell

Speaking on Dutch Mantell’s podcast in 2023, Jamie Dundee revealed that his father was living with dementia and said it was stage three. There is no public information connecting that diagnosis to Dundee’s death.

The Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame inducted him in 2017 alongside a class that also featured Lawler, Jimmy Hart, Koko B. Ware and others. Promoting, managing and working the independent circuit took up much of the later stretch of his career, and younger wrestlers he trained and coached went on to win championships of their own. His final match came on December 14, 2019 — an eight-man tag match at the “Bobby Eaton: A Night of Appreciation” event, in which he was on the losing side. He retired from in-ring competition that year, ending a Memphis career that spanned more than half a century.

The business ran through the family. WWE billed Jamie Dundee under the name JC Ice, and tag team legend Bobby Eaton was married to Dundee’s daughter, Donna, until she died in 2021. Memphis fans will hold onto one last image of “Superstar,” the one from that tribute broadcast: a line of younger wrestlers waiting to greet him, one day before his son announced that he was gone.
