A man who was on the Most Wanted List in 2017 for the alleged murder of his presumed girlfriend has been found.

A former Marine, Raymond Samuel McLeod, 38, of Phoenix, was arrested in El Salvador Monday afternoon, after someone shared a tip with authorities that they believed the man teaching English in Sonsonate was the man that was on the “Wanted” poster.

McLeod has been sought for six years, after a woman was found dead in an apartment in San Diego, California.

McLeod has been a fugitive since June of 2016, when San Diego police responded to the murder scene.

The victim, Krystal Mitchell, 30 at the time of her death, from Phoenix, had been strangled. She was the mother of two young children.

Police said that the woman was last seen alive with the suspect, and issued an arrest warrant, according to the Marshals Service.

McLeod reportedly has a history of domestic violence.

“I am extremely gratified to hear the news of Raymond McLeod’s arrest without incident,” U.S. Marshals Director Ronald Davis said in a statement.

“It is our sincere hope that his capture brings some sense of relief to Krystal Mitchell’s family, especially her mother, Josephine Wentzel, who has worked so diligently with law enforcement these past years to see this day of justice arrive.”

In April 2021, the Marshals Service offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to McLeod’s arrest.

It appears that McLeod escaped to Central America via Mexico. He had been sighted in Belize and Guatemala over the years, apparently moving from country to country.

He is now in custody in El Salvador and will be sent back to California to face murder charges.
