A bungee jumping incident is being investigated for the death of a Columbian woman who fell over 150 feet to her death last year, because she allegedly misunderstood the instructions given to her at the jump site.
The company, Sky Bungee, says the story about the jump has been misunderstood – not the instructions.
Yecenia Morales Gomez, a Columbian lawyer, 25, traveled to the Amaga Viaduct with her boyfriend to try her first bungee jump at a popular jumping spot called Sky Bungee Jumping.
According to the initial report, the boyfriend was the first to prepare for the jump. Both he and Gomez had their harnesses secured, but when the boyfriend was given the signal to jump, it was reported that Gomez misunderstood, thinking it was her turn, and jumped off the bridge without being connected to a bungee cord.
She fell to the ground and CPR was attempted to revive her but failed. The Columbian press reported that Gomez had a heart attack before she reached the ground.
Gomez’s boyfriend, who tried to save her, suffered injuries as well while running down the hills, and received medical attention.
The local mayor, Gustavo Guzmán, said at the time of the incident, that the tragedy was a result of a misunderstanding.
The bungee company, Sky Bungee, gave a statement contradicting the initial report that Gomez had misunderstood the instructions. The company said they had followed all safety protocols and that no one else had been bungee jumping at the same time as Gomez. They said that Gomez was not confused by the command given to her boyfriend. “At the time of the accident, nobody jumped, neither her boyfriend nor anyone else. Our protocol is designed for single jumps and with only one person per jump. It means that in order to jump a person must finish everything related to the previous person’s jump.”
The matter is being investigated.
