A woman from the Bay Area is currently fighting for her life in the hospital after being shot on Sunday, April 2, while in the drive-thru of a McDonald’s restaurant in Lakeland, California.

The victim, Rebecca Hyde, had gone out for a quick bite to eat with her long-time boyfriend, David Tomor. While waiting in line at the drive-thru, there was a problem with their order, causing an unexpected delay.

The man in the car behind them became impatient and angry that the order was taking too long. He started honking and shouting, but they were told by the restaurant staff that policy does not allow them to receive their food outside of their car.

The man repeatedly exited his car to yell at Hyde and Tomor, which led to a confrontation between the two men. The irritated man eventually pulled out a gun, and a physical fight ensued between them.

The man’s girlfriend exited their car and joined the argument, prompting Hyde to become involved. After the fight ended, the couple entered their van and drove off, but the other man followed them and started shooting at them.

Hyde was shot in the neck, and the bullet lodged into her jaw. Tomor was shot in the arm. Hyde is now in critical condition in the hospital.

Officers from the Lakeland Police Department arrested Calvin Jordan Sousa, 28, in his home later that day. They charged him with two attempted murder counts, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and being a felon possessing a firearm. 

The victim’s family is still waiting for her to recover from her injuries, leaving her on life support.

The victim’s sister-in-law has spoken about the tragic incident, noting that the family is devastated by what happened. According to Tomor’s sister, Vanessa Tomor, the two had been a couple since they were teenagers and had two children together. They were known for doing everything together.
