Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb has raised the possibility that former President Donald Trump may soon confront legal consequences, possibly leading to jail time.
Cobb served as an Assistant US Attorney and was part of Trump’s legal counsel from July 2017 to May 2018. His comments come amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of Trump’s mishandling of confidential documents.
Special Counsel Jack Smith is spearheading the inquiry into potential criminal conduct by Trump. In a conversation with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Cobb highlighted substantial evidence against the former president, including the movement of documents sought by the Department of Justice, fraudulent affidavits, and distortions made on his behalf. Cobb considers the case against Trump to be robust and indicates that he might face a jail sentence.
The investigations into Trump’s activities span a wide range of alleged infractions, including his involvement in the US Capitol riot, attempts to reverse the 2020 election results in Georgia, the hush-money payment made to Stormy Daniels, and a tax evasion case filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The National Archives and Records Administration has informed Trump of its plan to transfer 16 records to Special Counsel Smith, which may provide further substantiation of Trump’s treatment of confidential information.
Cobb dismissed the notion that proving a violation of the Espionage Act is required, asserting that ample evidence exists of Trump’s mishandling of classified documents. Trump, however, insists on his innocence regarding all active investigations, asserting his right to reveal information under the Presidential Records Act.
Bill Barr, former US Attorney General under the Trump administration, also voiced his opinion that the case concerning classified documents presents a considerable legal threat to Trump. Barr stressed that Trump had no valid reason to retain these documents and could incur significant penalties if he attempted to hinder their retrieval.
