Broadway star Chris Peluso, whose memorable performances marked shows such as “Mamma Mia!” and “Wicked,” died at the age of 40, his family confirmed on Wednesday, August 15.
Playbill communicated the news, noting that the cause of death was not immediately made public.
His untimely departure occurred after Peluso had stepped back from his acting career to seek treatment for a schizoaffective disorder a year prior.
Peluso, a product of the University of Michigan’s Theatre Department, gained a reputation for his reliability and skill as an understudy on Broadway. His notable stand-in roles included The Balladeer in “Assassins” in 2004, parts in Elton John’s “Lestat,” and multiple lead roles in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”
His role as Sky in “Mamma Mia!” in 2008 was a highlight, and he impressed audiences nationally as Fiyero in “Wicked’s” tour, as well as in the Off-Broadway production of “The Glorious Ones.”
His talents also extended to London’s West End, where he performed in “Miss Saigon,” “The Woman in White,” “Death Takes a Holiday,” and “Show Boat.” His career further included starring in the UK touring cast of “Funny Girl.”
Tributes to Peluso’s legacy and character came from many, including an emotional Instagram tribute from the Michigan Musical Theatre Department, led by interim chair Linda Goodrich. Further sentiments were shared by “SEAL Team” actor Toni Trucks and artist Desi Oakley, who remembered him for his bright spirit and generosity.
Surviving Peluso are his wife Jessica Gomes, their daughter Aria Li, and their son Caio Lian.
