A 16-year-old boy from Brooklyn, New York died after jumping from a waterfall in upstate New York’s Catskills region.
The tragic incident occurred on August 8 when the teen jumped from Fawn’s Leap waterfall. He and a friend, after jumping, struggled with the hydraulic currents caused by the waterfall. A nearby individual managed to help one of them, but the boy could not be reached in time.
Subsequent search efforts by divers led to the discovery of the boy’s body. The identity of the deceased has not been shared publicly.
Recent weeks have seen multiple rescue operations at this location. Rescuers had to rappel down a cliff to save an injured swimmer on July 26, and a day earlier, 16 people had to be helped after torrential rains raised water levels at the Leap and nearby Rat’s Hole. The overseeing Department of Environmental Conservation has reiterated the importance of safety for visitors.
Fawn’s Leap, with its notable waterfall height, is a popular spot, especially among the younger crowd. Online platforms feature numerous videos of jumps, some of which emphasize the associated risks.
