Tragedy struck near a minor league baseball stadium during a game in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Wednesday, September 6, leaving an 11-year-old boy dead and a woman in her 20’s critically injured in a shooting.

According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), the shooting occurred at around 8:44 p.m. on Avenida Cesar Chavez near University Blvd.

The incident took place just outside the Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park.

The young victim and his family had just left the baseball game and were driving away from the park. Their truck pulled in front of another car, according to APD Chief Harold Medina. The cut-off car driver made a U-turn and someone in the second vehicle fired 17 shots at the family’s vehicle before reportedly fleeing the scene.

The child was fatally shot and the woman, a relative of the boy, was taken to University Hospital and is in critical condition.

APD Chief Medina briefed the press early Thursday morning about the incident.

The Albuquerque Isotopes, a Minor League Baseball team, were in the middle of a game when the shooting occurred.

Fortunately, multiple police officers were present at the stadium to monitor the game and were able to respond within minutes.

Chief Medina described the scene as “difficult,” finding a child inside the vehicle who had succumbed to his injuries.

A specialized homicide investigative team is now examining the scene.

No suspects have been arrested in connection to the shooting. Albuquerque police urge anyone with information that could be helpful to the case to come forward.
