A 12-year-old boy faced a severe attack from ten pit bulls in his local neighborhood.
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 26, on Grassy Knob Road in Rutherfordton, North Carolina while Hunter Bishop was riding his bicycle to a friend’s residence.
Amber Barnes, Hunter’s mother, discovered her son after the attack in a ditch and described the condition of the dogs as appearing malnourished. Due to the attack’s intensity, Hunter was urgently taken to Greenville Memorial Children’s Hospital, where he was admitted in a critical state.
Since the distressing event, Hunter has had five surgical procedures. The magnitude of his injuries posed a challenge for the medical team, especially when seeking sufficient undamaged skin for grafting purposes. He is expected to be in the hospital for several weeks.
Amber Barnes commented on the gravity of the situation, noting the amazement that her son survived. Photographs shared publicly highlighted the degree of Hunter’s injuries. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is currently assessing the incident and considering pursuing charges against the dogs’ owners.
The incident has prompted a community response, with a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Amber Barnes raising over money to aid with the resultant expenses. Hunter’s father, Derek Bishop, has expressed his appreciation for the community’s support and asked for continued prayers.
