Venice Bus Collision: Casualty Toll Hits 21, Injures 18

On the evening of October 3, 2023, close to Venice, Italy a horrific accident occurred with a bus packed predominantly with tourists from various nations. Twenty-one people were killed and 18 were injured.

Destined for a campsite near Marghera, the bus crashed through a barrier along an elevated path, hurtling down several feet to its fiery end near the Mestre railway lines.

The Venice prefect, Michele Di Bari, affirming the specifics of the victims, revealed a list that included two children, five Ukrainian citizens, a German national and the Italian driver.

Mauro Luongo, Venice firefighters’ team commander, shared his experience at the accident site, noting, “The scene was frightful. To remove some of the bodies, it took nearly an hour.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro of Venice, visibly affected and shaken by the sight deemed it “an apocalyptic scene.” Expressing his sentiments through X (formerly known as Twitter), he communicated his bereavement stating, “No words to describe… the catastrophe that hit our community tonight.”

With the crash happening at 7:45 in the evening, emergency services transported all the injured to five of the local hospitals.

Determining the cause of this accident remains a challenge. In his statement to RAI state television, Luca Zaia, Governor of Veneto underlined the complexities of the matter, stating that the bus was of recent make and electrically powered.

Prime minister Giorgia Meloni extended her thoughts to the families of the deceased and emphasized her constant dialogue with Mayor Brugnaro during this trying time.
