Andre Braugher, an esteemed American actor recognized for his diverse roles in television and film, passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 61. His death from lung cancer, confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, came after he was diagnosed just a few months ago.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, born on July 1, 1962, Braugher’s journey in the arts began at Stanford University, California, with a theater scholarship. He later graduated from The Juilliard School in New York in 1988.

Braugher’s first notable film role was in “Glory” (1989). He gained widespread recognition as Detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street,” from 1993 to 1999, earning an Emmy for his performance.

In “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” he portrayed Captain Raymond Holt, receiving four Emmy nominations. His career over three decades included roles in “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” “Salt,” and guest appearances in “Law & Order: SVU.”

Braugher’s marriage to actress Ami Brabson, whom he met during “Homicide: Life on the Street,” was a testament to his blending of personal and professional life. Together, they raised three sons: Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.

He was set to star in “The Residence” on Netflix, playing A.B. Wynter, with production starting the following year. His death has temporarily stopped the show’s production.

Braugher’s colleagues and fans have expressed their grief and admiration. Terry Crews, from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” shared his experiences with Braugher on Instagram, acknowledging his significant influence and friendship.
