A small plane, carrying four Canadian skydivers and a Mexican pilot, had to make an emergency landing on Playa Bachoco, a popular beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico on February 11, 2024.
The unplanned landing sadly claimed the life of a 62-year-old Mexican tourist, Armando D.C., who was enjoying a day at the beach with his wife.
Five others, including the four Canadian skydivers aged 60, 59, 41, and 35, and a 40-year-old Mexican man, sustained injuries. However, they were reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. Local media reports revealed that the injured individuals were among a group of 17 passengers onboard the small aircraft.
According to initial reports from Civil Protection officials, the Cessna Caravan, operated by the local company Skydive Puerto Escondido, was forced to make the unexpected landing. The specific reasons for this course of action are yet to be disclosed.
While the plane survived the landing relatively unscathed, it tragically landed almost directly on Armando D.C., a resident of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. His wife, who was also present at the scene, remained unharmed.
The incident has triggered further scrutiny of skydiving operations and the use of public beaches for emergency landings. The exact cause of the mechanical failure is still being investigated by local authorities and aviation officials.
The dramatic event has cast a shadow over the usually serene Bacocho Beach, a sought-after tourist destination known for its natural beauty. The incident has initiated discussions on public safety and aviation regulations.
Oaxaca’s Governor, Salomón Jara Cruz, offered his condolences to the victims and their families, reaffirming the state’s commitment to the safety of both residents and visitors. The local community and businesses around Playa Bachoco have also come together to provide support to those affected by this tragic event.
