The sudden death of Texas A&M-Commerce football player Keith Miller III has left the university community and his family reeling with shock and grief. Miller, who was 23 years old, was found dead in his apartment near the Commerce, Texas campus last Thursday evening, April 11, 2024. Authorities have yet to release details on the cause of his death, which remains under investigation.

A native of The Colony, Texas, Miller was well-regarded not only for his athletic prowess but also for his vibrant personality and leadership qualities. He was a key figure on the A&M-Commerce Lions team, serving as captain in the 2023 season, and was celebrated for his impactful presence both on and off the field.

Miller’s football journey began at The Colony High School, where he distinguished himself as a top player. This led him to initially play for the Colorado Buffaloes before he transferred back to Texas to play for A&M-Commerce. Over his two seasons with the Lions, he made significant contributions as a wide receiver.

The university’s head coach, Clint Dolezel, expressed his sorrow over the loss, describing Miller as a beloved father, son, teammate, and student. “Keith was the heart of our team and more so a caring individual off the field,” Dolezel said in a statement. Athletic Director Jim Curry also shared his distress, noting the difficulty in finding words to express the sudden vacuum left by Miller’s departure.

In response to the tragedy, Texas A&M-Commerce has expanded counseling services to support students coping with the loss. The entire Lion community, including students, faculty, and alumni, have been encouraged to come together during this challenging time to support one another and honor Miller’s memory.

Brenden Rice, the son of NFL Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice and a former teammate of Miller at Colorado, now a player at USC, reflected on their time together, sharing his grief on social media. “Keith was not just a teammate but a brother to me,” Rice said, promising to look after Miller’s son, highlighting the deep personal bonds formed through their shared time on and off the field.
