A Georgia family is mourning the loss of their two-year-old son, Nakyzi Odums, who died after accidentally shooting himself in a Walmart parking lot. The tragedy happened in Douglas, Georgia on July 3, 2024, while his parents were just feet away at a nearby fireworks stand.
Witnesses report that Nakyzi’s parents, Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, had stepped out of their vehicle to shop for fireworks when they heard a sudden pop. Rushing back to their car, they found their young son had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention and being transported to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida, Nakyzi died from his injuries on July 6, 2024.
In a statement, the Douglas Police Department confirmed the child’s death and expressed their condolences: “The toddler who accidentally shot himself on July 3, 2024 tragically died this afternoon, July 6, 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family during this challenging period.”
Nakyzi’s grandmother described him on a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with funeral expenses as a child who “smiled brightly, laughed wholeheartedly, and loved unconditionally.” The page has raised over $900 so far and aims to provide financial support for the burial and allow the parents time to grieve properly.
Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette highlighted the importance of firearm safety, especially around children. “You’re allowed to have a gun in the car, but when there’s a child involved, you need to make sure that the gun is secure so that the child doesn’t have access to it,” Pruette said. The police are continuing their investigation to determine how Nakyzi accessed the firearm.
Witnesses indicated that Nakyzi was sitting in the front seat and the gun may have been placed in the side of the car door, within reach of the toddler. The authorities are examining the circumstances to ascertain any negligence or oversight on the part of the parents. As of now, it remains unclear if they will face charges related to the incident.
The tragedy has cast a pall over the community, with many expressing their sorrow and support for the family. Nakyzi’s grandmother, in her plea for donations, wrote, “As one of his grandmothers, I am stepping in and requesting support of burial for our sweet baby. Donations will also allow his mom and dad time to grieve properly. Please donate anything you desire if it’s in your heart and will.”
