On the CNN’s “Newsnight” episode on November 20, 2024, Abby Phillip, the host, stepped in to address what she viewed as disrespectful behavior by pro-Trump guest Bruce LeVell towards Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky. LeVell had used the term “dear” during a heated discussion, which prompted Phillip’s intervention.
The conversation focused on the investigations into alleged sexual misconduct by Matt Gaetz, the former congressman from Florida. LeVell claimed that the Department of Justice found “nothing there” in the allegations against Gaetz. Roginsky, however, disputed this, pointing out that the Justice Department had only stated that they lacked sufficient evidence for an indictment, not that Gaetz was innocent.
Phillip responded to LeVell’s “dear” remark by stating, “Do not address a grown woman in that condescending tone at my table.” LeVell accepted Phillip’s admonition, and the discussion resumed. This incident underscores CNN’s ongoing commitment to ensuring respect and civility during political debates.
This is not the first time LeVell has been involved in a contentious situation on CNN. In August, Laura Coates, another CNN anchor, reprimanded him for talking over her during a panel discussion about former President Trump’s comments on Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity. Coates challenged LeVell’s statements about Harris’ racial self-identification during her political career.
Trump had nominated Gaetz as attorney general, but Gaetz later withdrew his name from consideration, citing the ongoing investigation as a distraction. The Justice Department had previously informed Gaetz that he wouldn’t face charges in their probe into allegations of sexual misconduct, including accusations of inappropriate behavior with a 17-year-old girl and paying for “intimate encounters” with other women.
CNN has seen a substantial reduction in viewership recently, with ratings falling to their lowest levels since 2000. Amid these challenges, on-air staff are reportedly feeling the heat of potential cutbacks, with the careers of high-profile anchors such as Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett hanging in the balance as wage cuts and layoffs are considered.
CNN has reiterated its commitment to maintaining professional discourse on its shows. The network declared that it has “zero tolerance for racism or bigotry” and stressed its dedication to fostering meaningful discussions among disagreeing parties while ensuring guests are not demeaned.
