Legendary Singer Dies in Tragic Motorcycle Crash at 56

Glen Hansard, the Irish singer-songwriter who won an Academy Award for his work on the 2007 film “Once,” was killed July 29, 2026, in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident on Dublin’s western outskirts. Emergency services received the call shortly before 4:30 a.m. reporting the crash on Lower Road at the Strawberry Beds in Lucan, according to Irish police.

The 56-year-old musician was pronounced dead at the scene despite treatment efforts. He leaves behind his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their 3-year-old son, Christy.

From Dublin Streets to Hollywood Glory

Hansard dropped out of school at age 13 and took to busking on Dublin streets before launching The Frames in 1990. His first taste of international recognition came in 1991 when he portrayed guitarist Outspan Foster in “The Commitments,” a musical comedy about working-class kids forming a soul band in North Dublin.

But global stardom arrived with “Once,” writer-director John Carney’s low-budget 2007 romance about two Dublin musicians finding love through their art. Hansard co-starred with Czech singer Markéta Irglová, and together they wrote and performed the soundtrack. Their song “Falling Slowly” won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 80th ceremony in 2008. The story later became a Broadway sensation, collecting eight Tony Awards including best musical.

The collaboration with Irglová extended beyond film, yielding two albums under the name The Swell Season. Between 1991 and 2006, The Frames released six studio albums. Hansard’s first solo effort, “Rhythm and Repose,” arrived in 2012, followed by “Didn’t He Ramble,” which secured a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2016. His 2018 release “Between Two Shores” continued his solo trajectory.

Music Legends and Politicians Mourn

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed deep sadness, describing Hansard as a gifted performer who enriched Ireland’s artistic heritage throughout his career. Ireland’s culture minister, Patrick O’Donovan, noted few artists had such impact on modern Irish storytelling, predicting Hansard’s influence would “last generations” in Irish music.

American rock icon Bruce Springsteen, who invited Hansard onstage for a duet on “Drive All Night” at a 2013 Kilkenny concert, said he and his E Street bandmates were “heartbroken”. Recalling an earlier encounter with Hansard, Springsteen praised him for his generosity, graciousness, and constant willingness to perform.

English artist Ed Sheeran expressed devastation over the loss, describing Hansard as both an exceptional person and a powerful creative talent. “The Commitments” co-star Andrew Strong called the death a truly senseless, tragic loss. Actor Chris O’Dowd expressed disbelief that such a vibrant life had ended prematurely, extending his sympathies to Hansard’s spouse and child.

Ryan Tubridy, former host of the Irish chat show “The Late Late Show,” expressed profound sorrow while remembering Hansard as an outstanding artist passionate about addressing homelessness and supporting Ireland. West Side Story actress Rachel Zegler posted images of herself with Hansard alongside a short tribute expressing her eternal affection for him.

Christmas Eve Busking for the Homeless

Starting in 2010, Hansard launched an annual Christmas Eve street performance in central Dublin, attracting prominent musicians like Bono, Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan. Proceeds benefited The Dublin Simon Community, which provides services to homeless individuals throughout Ireland.

The charity said it was “devastated” by his passing and expressed eternal appreciation for the significant difference he made in the lives of their clients. Artist Colin Davidson, a close friend, told the BBC’s “Evening Extra” program that the yearly Christmas performance had evolved into a globally recognized Irish tradition, characterizing it as Hansard’s method of both raising awareness about homelessness and providing tangible financial support.

Davidson expressed profound grief over the loss and struggled to articulate his emotions. He characterized Hansard as an exceptionally compassionate, faithful, and affectionate person he felt honored to know. ATC Management, which represented Hansard, confirmed his death and said the musician’s family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken” by the tragedy. The agency expressed gratitude to first responders at the scene and requested privacy during the ongoing police inquiry. Officials are seeking witnesses who may assist in their examination of the collision.
