Leslie Charleson, who portrayed Dr. Monica Quartermaine on ABC’s “General Hospital” for nearly five decades, has died at age 79. The veteran actress passed away on January 12, 2025, after battling a long illness.

Frank Valentini, Executive Producer of “General Hospital,” announced her passing on Instagram: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson. Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew.”

Born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1945, Charleson began her acting career in the 1960s, appearing in various television shows and commercials. Before joining “General Hospital,” she gained recognition for roles in other soap operas, including “A Flame in the Wind,” “As the World Turns,” and “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing.”

Charleson joined the cast of “General Hospital” in 1977, stepping into the role of Monica Quartermaine, a character previously played by Patsy Rahn. Her portrayal of the razor-sharp cardiologist earned her four Daytime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

In a 2019 interview with Digital Journal, the actress shared that she had initially signed on for only two years and was unsure of what led to the change. Reflecting on her decision to join the cast, she noted that at the time, there weren’t many strong female roles available. She described it as an incredible experience with compelling material to work with.

During her tenure on “General Hospital,” Charleson tackled numerous significant storylines, including Monica’s breast cancer diagnosis in the 1990s. Her character became particularly known for being involved in one of daytime television’s most memorable love triangles.

In 2004, Charleson made a guest appearance on the hit sitcom “Friends,” appearing as herself in the episode “The One Where the Stripper Cries.” She was featured on the game show Pyramid during her cameo.

Her career faced challenges in 2018 when she suffered an injury while walking her dog, requiring a temporary replacement on the show. The official “General Hospital” account posted at the time: “Leslie Charleson’s beloved dog, Riley Rose, was a little too eager for her morning walk and tripped Leslie – injuring her leg.”

In 2010, Charleson’s status on the show was reduced to recurring, though she continued to appear regularly. Her final appearance on “General Hospital” came in December 2023, in an episode titled “Everything You Ever Wanted.” Even during her absence, her character remained present in the show’s narrative, often mentioned as being “upstairs in the mansion.”

Throughout her time on “General Hospital,” Charleson’s portrayal of Monica Quartermaine was particularly acclaimed for transforming what was initially considered a “bad girl” character into one of the show’s most complex and enduring roles. Her character navigated through numerous dramatic storylines, including affairs with fellow doctors, family conflicts, and professional challenges at the fictional Port Charles hospital.

Charleson appeared in over 2,000 episodes during her tenure, making her one of the longest-serving soap opera stars in American daytime television history. Her character’s storylines, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, were considered a driving force behind the show’s popularity. As the matriarch of the Quartermaine family, Monica’s character development from a cardiologist to a central figure in Port Charles’ most prominent family kept viewers engaged for decades.

In recent years, health issues had reduced Charleson’s screen time, though she maintained her connection to the show until her final appearance.
