Community-Favorite Pastor Found Murdered

A 76-year-old pastor from Arizona was found dead in his residence, creating unease in the New River community.

Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann’s body was discovered in his New River, Arizona, home on April 28 following a 911 call to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators reported that his body was posed with arms outstretched on his bed and hands fixed to the wall, indicating severe injuries.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Schonemann’s death as a homicide. However, the cause of death, potential suspects, and the motive remain undisclosed by authorities.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy Will Jinks stated, “Based on observations at the scene, it appeared there may have been foul play. MCSO is actively working the case. There are specific and unique circumstances to this case that we are not at liberty to discuss to ensure we keep the integrity of the investigation.”

Although authorities assure the community there is no ongoing threat, residents remain unsettled by the crime’s violent nature.

Resident Mike Anders expressed concern, noting that he and others have started locking their doors, which was previously uncommon. Anders speculated whether the perpetrator might have been someone the pastor knew.

Local resident Emily Brean remarked on the shock of such a violent event in New River. In a community known for its safety, where people often leave keys in vehicles and doors unlocked, Brean questioned why a religious leader would be targeted.

Schonemann served as pastor of New River Bible Chapel for about 25 years and was highly regarded. Besides his religious duties, he was passionate about vehicles, including cars, trucks, and planes.

Schonemann’s wife passed away in 2022 after nearly 49 years of marriage. Following her death, he devoted more time to the church, becoming a cherished figure in the community, according to his son, Randall Schonemann. Randall’s wife, Crystal Schonemann, mentioned his sociable nature and eagerness to engage with others.

The pastor was also active in the Red Devil’s Hot Rod Club, where he was involved in building and repairing classic cars and motorcycles. Club members remember him for both his technical skills and compassionate demeanor.

Randall defended his father’s character, asserting that he had no conflicts with others and positively influenced many lives.

Public records show Schonemann was a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam before dedicating decades to spiritual leadership in New River.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate and encourages anyone with information on Schonemann’s death to contact them.

New River, an unincorporated community in northern Maricopa County, Arizona, lies just north of Phoenix. Established in the 1960s, it was named after a seasonal wash. The desert community, located at Daisy Mountain’s foothills, retains a rural character despite its proximity to Phoenix.

The area attracts those seeking a rural lifestyle with larger property sizes, while remaining close to Phoenix for urban amenities. New River offers a mix of desert scenery, spacious properties, and proximity to the city, making it a distinctive location within Arizona.
