David Furnish offered an encouraging update on his husband Elton John’s condition this week, telling Variety the music legend is “battling on” despite persistent vision issues that have affected the 78-year-old singer over the past year.
Speaking before the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Furnish described a content domestic life for the EGOT winner, who retired from touring to concentrate on family.
Furnish reported that John is doing well, continuing to press on, staying active and focused at home with their sons — the reason he gave up touring.
Furnish and John are parents to two sons: Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13. Since John ended his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in July 2023, the family has largely kept a low profile, swapping packed arenas for life near Windsor Castle.
The “Rocket Man” star has been open about his growing health problems in recent years. In July 2024, he lost sight in his right eye after a severe infection while on holiday in the south of France. On Good Morning America that November, he revealed he’d gone four months without vision in his right eye and has reduced sight in his left.
The vision setback adds to a list of health issues for the veteran performer. At the Toronto International Film Festival screening of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” he humorously recounted his medical history, saying he’d had operations on his knees, right hip, prostate, appendix, and tonsils.
“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” John joked. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”
In 2021, John experienced a serious fall that forced him to postpone several farewell tour dates. He later had hip surgery and underwent intensive physiotherapy to regain mobility and return to performing.
Despite these issues, John remains actively involved in charitable work. The annual Academy Awards viewing party, now in its 34th year, supports HIV/AIDS research and advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised over £300 million since it began in 1992.
This year’s event will be co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka. Grammy winner Lola Young is set to perform, and the guest list includes celebrities such as Dua Lipa, Donatella Versace, Keke Palmer, Quinta Brunson, Jon Batiste, Nikki Glaser, Adam Lambert, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, and Sharon Stone.
Furnish expressed hope about this year’s fundraising targets, aiming to exceed $9 million for the foundation. He noted last year’s efforts were complicated by the devastating Los Angeles fires in January 2025, which killed at least 31 people and destroyed more than 18,000 structures across Pacific Palisades and Altadena, creating competing charitable needs in Southern California.
Ticket demand is strong this year, Furnish said, and the evening will include a special artwork by Irish painter Jack Coulter. Coulter painted live while John played “Tiny Dancer” on piano — a one-off piece that will be auctioned at the event.
John and Furnish attended Donatella Versace’s New Year’s Eve party in 2025, along with Zachary and Elijah. The rare outing underscored the family’s focus on staying together despite John’s ongoing health concerns.
Although John has left the rigors of touring behind, Furnish’s remarks indicate the singer has found calm in this new phase. He prioritizes family time while continuing to champion causes that define his legacy beyond music. For fans worried about the beloved performer, Furnish’s update is reassuring: John is in good spirits, surrounded by love, and remains engaged despite his physical challenges.
