Melania Trump’s Bold Decision Rejects The White House

First Lady Melania Trump has made a striking decision that’s turning heads in Washington: she’s chosen to largely skip living in the White House during her husband’s second term, instead splitting her time between New York City and Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.

The revelation has sparked intense discussion about the unconventional arrangement at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, with sources close to the situation confirming that President Donald Trump and the First Lady maintain distinctly separate lives between the nation’s capital, Manhattan, and Florida.

According to multiple reports, Melania Trump has spent what appears to be fewer than 14 days at the White House since President Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. The First Lady vanishes from public view for weeks at a time, reportedly holing up in Trump Tower in Manhattan or at the couple’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.

Author Michael Wolff, who has written several books about the Trump administration, triggered a firestorm with his blunt assessment of the presidential marriage. “They clearly do not in any way inhabit a marriage as we define marriage,” Wolff said on The Daily Beast podcast.

The White House pushed back hard against Wolff’s characterization. Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed the claims as “blatant lies and fabrications,” calling Wolff “a blithering idiot” who leads “a miserable existence devoid of reality.”

Despite the official denials, insiders paint a picture of a first lady who has deliberately crafted a life outside traditional expectations. Those familiar with her schedule confirm that Melania Trump’s whereabouts have become a sensitive topic within the White House walls.

The arrangement isn’t entirely unprecedented for the Trumps. During the president’s first term, Melania Trump waited months before moving into the White House, initially staying in New York with their son Barron so he could finish his school year. She also maintained her own bedroom in the White House during that period, keeping physical distance even when residing in the same building.

Now, with Barron Trump at 19 years old and in his sophomore year at New York University’s Stern School of Business—taking classes at the school’s Washington, D.C. campus—Melania Trump has apparently decided to split her time among multiple residences. An anonymous insider told reporters that D.C. was always temporary in her mind.

The first lady’s sparse appearances have coincided with her work on a documentary about her life, titled “Melania,” which premiered in theaters on January 30, 2026, and began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on March 9, 2026. The film, directed by Brett Ratner, chronicled the 20 days before President Trump’s second inauguration and featured footage shot at various locations, including the White House, Mar-a-Lago, and New York.

Sources indicate that Melania Trump feels deeply spooked by the assassination attempts on her husband’s life during the 2024 campaign, which has influenced her decisions about where to spend her time. The couple stayed away from each other during particularly challenging moments too—Melania Trump notably avoided attending her husband’s trial in Manhattan, where he was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Before the inauguration, Melania Trump told Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt about her plans for the second term. “I will be in the White House. And, you know, when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach,” she said, adding that her first priority was “to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife.”

Donald Trump and Melania lived together in New York City for years before his presidential career launched. Trump grew up in the Jamaica Estates neighborhood of Queens, while Melania moved to Manhattan from Europe in 1996 to pursue modeling. The couple later resided together at Trump Tower. That New York connection appears stronger than ever as she maintains her presence in the city.

The situation has even moved into the legal arena. Michael Wolff filed a lawsuit against Melania Trump in New York in October 2025, claiming she threatened him with a $1 billion defamation suit over his reporting. The case has raised questions about her legal residence and where she actually spends most of her time—questions that could have significant implications beyond tabloid gossip.

Paolo Zampolli, the former modeling agent who introduced the couple at a party in 1998, has defended the first lady’s commitment to her role. “She loves the White House. And she loves the role of serving as our first lady,” Zampolli told The New York Times.

Trump administration officials maintain that Melania Trump visits the White House “more often than the public knows,” though they declined to provide specific details about her schedule or presence in the residence.
