The native Texan created a remarkable body of work as one of the nation’s most frequently staged female playwrights while maintaining a recognizable presence on TV during the 1980s and 1990s.

“Jessie Jones was a beautiful, hilarious, and strong Texas woman with personality plus,” Wooten said in a statement.

Born on August 21, 1950, in the Texas Panhandle, Jones completed her education at the University of Texas at Austin, filling her collegiate years with theatrical pursuits and design work. She triumphed in a high school essay and speech contest that initially introduced her to Washington, D.C., a metropolis she promised herself she would eventually settle in. During an unusual chapter before her entertainment career, she held a position with President Lyndon B. Johnson and First Lady Bird Johnson at their television facility in Austin before chasing her genuine passion in show business.

Jones’ journey into performance art commenced upon encountering Nicholas Hope, who selected her for the starring role in his production “A Friend of the Family.” This encounter ignited a working partnership lasting many decades, yielding numerous cherished Southern comedic works in American theatrical history.

Her career in television began in 1989 with cameo performances on “Hooperman” and “Newhart.” Jones rapidly established herself as a desired supporting performer, securing parts in numerous highly-rated programs, including “Night Court,” “Designing Women,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Grace Under Fire,” “Judging Amy,” “Cold Case,” and “Who’s the Boss?”

Among her most notable television appearances occurred in September 1990 during her feature in the season three opener of “Murphy Brown” as Mrs. Betty Hooley, an individual chosen at random by Candice Bergen’s character for a sidewalk interview that becomes surprisingly divisive. The concept goes awry when Hooley reveals her prejudiced views during filming, prompting a stern rebuke from Murphy. Jones additionally obtained a recurring position on the brief WB comedy “You’re the One,” which broadcast just two episodes in April 1998, and performed in several installments of the Saturday morning ABC series “Fudge.”

While her performance career thrived, Jones commenced theatrical writing during the early 1990s. Her major success arrived with “Dearly Departed,” a comedy about Southern funeral traditions she created with performer David Dean Bottrell. The production premiered off-Broadway at Second Stage Theater in December 1991 and gained widespread popularity throughout American theater, staged thousands of times by theatrical groups both large and small nationwide. Jones and Bottrell authored the script for the Fox Searchlight film version, distributed in 2001 as “Kingdom Come,” which featured Whoopi Goldberg, LL Cool J, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Vivica A. Fox.

After Jones concluded her acting pursuits in 2005, she dedicated herself entirely to creating plays. Working with Hope and Wooten, she established the collaborative group Jones Hope Wooten, crafting Southern-themed comedies that connected with theatergoers throughout the nation. The partnership produced over two dozen theatrical works collectively, including “The Sweet Delilah Swim Club,” “The Red Velvet Cake War,” “Christmas Belles,” and “The Savannah Sipping Society.” Their creations have been staged in all 50 states and over 25 nations, with translations into numerous languages, including Japanese and Bulgarian.

Jones additionally made contributions to television writing, receiving acknowledgment for her work on the WB comedy “For Your Love” and the Emmy-honored children’s program “Teacher’s Pet.”

Outside her career accomplishments, Jones maintained a fulfilling and exploratory existence. She attended the Los Angeles Culinary Academy, developed a passion for salsa dancing, and journeyed globally with Wooten, exploring destinations from New Zealand to Morocco to Easter Island. Her memorial notice revealed aspects of her character: she declined any official memorial service. “Jessie felt every performance of one of her plays was a celebration, so she’s covered,” Wooten wrote.

Jones leaves behind her sisters Ellen and Laura, her brother-in-law Jim McCarthy, her niece Margaret McCarthy, and her nephews Tommy McCarthy, Todd Hyso, and Paul Hyso. The relatives requested that memorial contributions be directed to Planned Parenthood.

As her memorial states, “Jessie Jones did something amazing with her one wild and precious life: She made the world laugh.”
