Dozens Dead: Terrifying Illness Spreads

Laboratory tests have identified Ebola Bundibugyo as the pathogen behind a deadly outbreak in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo that has already claimed at least 134 lives and sickened nearly 250 people, health officials confirmed May 15, 2026.

The National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa detected the rare Ebola species in eight of 13 samples collected from patients in the Mongbwalu and Rwampara health zones of Ituri Province. Health authorities suspect 80 additional community deaths may be connected to the virus as the case count continues to rise.

Weeks passed between the first known infection and laboratory confirmation — a dangerous delay for a disease with a 21-day incubation period. A nurse who developed symptoms on April 24 is believed to be the initial patient, but it took three weeks before testing verified an outbreak was underway.

A Rare Strain With Few Defenses

Bundibugyo represents one of three Ebola species capable of causing human disease, yet it remains poorly studied compared to its deadlier cousin, the Zaire strain. Western Uganda’s Bundibugyo district gave the virus its name in 2007, when the first recognized outbreak infected 131 people and killed 42 — a case fatality rate of 32%. Another outbreak occurred in 2012, then the virus disappeared from view.

The virus has no licensed vaccine or treatment — only experimental options remain available. Even diagnostic tools struggle with Bundibugyo; initial tests on samples from this outbreak returned negative results for Ebola, requiring more advanced laboratory analysis to pinpoint the specific species.

Dealing with Bundibugyo is “one of the most significant concerns” in this outbreak, said Professor Trudie Lang of the University of Oxford.

International Emergency Declared

The World Health Organization has issued a public health emergency of international concern — its most serious alert level — pointing to rapid transmission, the conflict-ravaged environment where the disease is spreading and the absence of approved medical countermeasures for this particular species.

“The Democratic Republic of the Congo has extensive experience responding to Ebola outbreaks, and WHO is rapidly scaling up support to the ongoing response,” said Dr. Mohamed Janabi, the WHO Regional Director for Africa.

The agency is flying five metric tons of equipment and supplies from Kinshasa to Bunia, including protective gear for infection control, laboratory transport materials, case management resources and tents. Teams of epidemiologists, medical personnel and logistics experts are being sent to strengthen surveillance systems, contact tracing operations and protocols for safe burials.

Weeks of Silent Spread

Dr. Anne Cori of Imperial College London cautioned that undetected transmission has been occurring for weeks, complicating efforts to identify contacts and isolate infected individuals. Patients have presented with fever, widespread body pain, weakness and vomiting, with bleeding occurring in some cases and several people deteriorating quickly before death.

The outbreak zone presents severe logistical challenges: population flows driven by mining activity in urban areas, ongoing violence from a protracted civil war and more than 250,000 displaced residents. Heavy cross-border movement compounds the risk of the virus spreading to neighboring countries.

Uganda has already confirmed Bundibugyo in a patient who traveled from the DRC and subsequently died at a medical facility, with a second case identified since then. South Sudan and Rwanda face elevated risk due to substantial trade and travel connections with the affected provinces.

A Familiar Country, an Unfamiliar Enemy

The DRC is confronting its 17th Ebola outbreak since scientists first discovered the virus in 1976 in Yambuku, located in Equateur Province. The previous outbreak concluded in December 2025. That extensive history has created robust response capabilities — but not for this specific strain.

Without a vaccine or targeted drug, treatment for Bundibugyo depends entirely on optimized supportive care — controlling pain, addressing secondary infections and managing fluids and nutrition. Early medical intervention improves survival odds, but reaching patients quickly in a war-torn, displacement-affected region poses the greatest challenge. Symptoms can begin like the flu: fever, headache and fatigue. Then come the vomiting, diarrhea, organ failure and, for some, internal and external bleeding. About a third of patients die.

Global Risk Remains Low

An international emergency declaration does not suggest a pandemic threat similar to COVID. Ebola transmits through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, and spread typically doesn’t occur until symptoms emerge. The catastrophic 2014-16 West Africa outbreak infected 28,600 people, yet the United Kingdom recorded only three cases — all healthcare workers who had volunteered overseas.

The risk Ebola poses to the wider world remains tiny, but the WHO designation signals something else. “It does reflect that the situation is complex enough to require international coordination,” Dr. Amanda Rojek, of the Pandemic Sciences Institute at the University of Oxford, told reporters.
