Jolie and Pitt’s Daughter Drops Bombshell

The second-eldest child of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has made her choice official. Zahara Marley Jolie, 21, accepted her college diploma on Saturday, May 17, 2026, at Spelman College under her mother’s surname only — a public confirmation of a shift she began signaling years ago.

The announcement of her name as she crossed the stage was shared on Reddit in a video clip that quickly spread through entertainment circles. Zahara, adopted from Ethiopia at six months old in 2005, received her degree without any trace of the Pitt surname.

She joins at least three of her siblings in dropping their father’s surname since the 2016 separation. Maddox, adopted in 2002, Vivienne, one half of the twins born in 2008, and Shiloh have all removed Pitt from their public-facing names. The six Jolie-Pitt children — Maddox, Zahara, Pax, who was adopted from an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, in 2007, Shiloh, born in 2006, and twins Knox and Vivienne — have mostly avoided the spotlight during the protracted dissolution of their parents’ marriage.

From Atlanta Freshman to College Graduate

Zahara first hinted at the change in 2023 when she joined her sorority at the historically Black women’s college in Atlanta. In a video from that time, she introduced herself with deliberate clarity: “My name is Zahara Marley Jolie.” What registered then as a personal preference became something more binding on Monday — a formal declaration made before faculty, family and classmates.

Her mother celebrated her enrollment at Spelman in 2022 with an Instagram post that read, “Zahara with her Spelman sisters! Congratulations to all new students starting this year. A very special place and an honor to have a family member as a new Spelman girl.”

The school selection carried significance beyond academics. In a previous interview with Time, the actress described Zahara as “an extraordinary African woman” whose relationship to her heritage was hers alone to shape. Jolie has spoken openly about honoring her daughter’s bond with the African continent and allowing Zahara to define that connection on her own terms.

A Tribute Just Weeks Before

Just weeks before graduation, Zahara delivered a speech at her sorority with her mother present. A clip posted on X showed the then-student reflecting on her upbringing in unusually personal terms.

“My mom and I have a unique, almost kindred relationship that can be hard to put into words,” Zahara said in the speech. She described being adopted at six months old and receiving siblings she called “some of the most special and loving people,” crediting her mother with raising the family on principles of kindness, service, and personal growth.

The remarks broke from the characteristic silence the Jolie-Pitt children have maintained about private family matters. The speech was affectionate, detailed, and directed toward only one parent.

A Quiet Statement on a Public Stage

Saturday’s ceremony marked a turning point in an arc that began four years earlier when Zahara first arrived on the Spelman campus. Her mother sat in the audience once again, this time watching her daughter graduate under a name that now carries the weight of official record.

The surname changes among the siblings have accumulated gradually since the divorce filing in 2016, which stretched through years of custody disputes and property battles before reaching finalization in December 2024.

A Family Reshaped in Public View

Throughout eight years of court filings and legal wrangling between the separation and finalized divorce, the children remained largely invisible — until moments like this one, when their choices speak louder than any statement.

Zahara has accompanied her mother to high-profile events in recent years, including the 2025 Golden Globes and an outing in New York City in 2023, but those appearances have leaned celebratory rather than declarative. Monday’s graduation occupies different ground — a personal achievement that nevertheless communicates an unmistakable position.

Neither parent has publicly commented on the name change. The actor has focused on promoting film work and has given limited interviews about his personal life over the past year. Jolie has continued her humanitarian work and recent acting projects.

For Zahara, the next chapter begins under a name she has been quietly testing for years and now wears openly. The diploma reads Jolie. The signal, by now, is clear.
