Duane Ollinger, the wildcatting Texan whose obsessive hunt for buried Aztec gold turned a remote Utah ranch into one of cable television’s strangest hit shows, died on June 2, 2026, after a long battle with ALS. He was 68.
The star of Discovery Channel’s “Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch” had stepped back from on-camera duties as his health declined. His passing closes a chapter on a character who became, for legions of viewers, the bottom-line embodiment of treasure-hunting fever — a former high-risk oil contractor who sank his fortune into the ground and kept digging.
From Oil Fields to a Cursed Frontier
Ollinger and his son Chad, both Texans, originally acquired the 160-acre property in eastern Utah with the idea of building a holistic healing center. What they found there pulled them in a different direction. The land sat near the infamous Skinwalker Ranch, a property with a long reputation for paranormal activity, and locals were already convinced the area was a cursed zone marked by unexplainable and disturbing occurrences.
Trespassers kept turning up, too — drawn by a persistent legend that Aztec gold, purportedly hidden by early Mormons, lay beneath the surface. Beneath the ranch, the Ollingers came to believe, was a maze of underground caverns that could hold millions of dollars in lost Aztec and Spanish gold. The property also contained rare metal deposits, including iridium.
That mix of myth, geology and dread became the engine of “Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch,” which premiered on the Discovery Channel in 2021. The series followed the father-son duo as they drilled, dove and dynamited their way through one obstacle after another, discovering various caverns that offered hope of magnificent riches but rarely delivered them cleanly.
“Duane Ollinger has sunk everything he has into hunting for what he believes is a vast fortune of gold on his property,” the show’s synopsis reads. “But with each step he takes closer to finding the treasure, the land seems to hold on tighter, stopping him in his tracks.”
The Frogs, the Caverns, the Legend
The ranch earned its name from a singular discovery. When Duane and Chad finally drilled through to the caverns beneath the surface, the water rose — and with it came hundreds of frogs, many of them blind. Above and below ground, holes seemed to sink toward the earth’s center. In a November 21, 2023, interview with the Idaho Press, the Ollingers described the place as something not quite normal, a remote stretch of Utah where the strange seemed to live just beneath the dirt.
As the series grew, so did the family’s footprint. Chad expanded into the role of entrepreneur, leading expeditions on the property and helping launch Blind Frog Ranch Outpost & Tours, which allowed fans to visit the site in person. Duane, by all accounts, remained the show’s emotional center — the gruff, dollars-and-cents patriarch whose conviction never seemed to waver, even as his bank account did.
A Family Story Turns Dark
The Ollinger story took a devastating turn in December 2025, when Chad Ollinger was charged with open murder after his cellmate was found dead from blunt force injuries during a stint in jail. In January 2026, a Las Vegas judge ordered him to undergo treatment at a mental health facility after he was deemed legally incompetent.
The criminal case unfolded as Duane’s health was failing, leaving the show — and the family — in flux. Production pressed forward. Treasure hunter Josh Feldman took over after Duane fell ill, assuming the lead role at the beginning of season six, which aired its first episode on May 28, 2026, just days before Duane’s death.
A Legacy Buried in the Ground
Ollinger never confirmed, in the eyes of his many skeptics, that the gold he chased was real. But the show built a passionate audience that kept tuning in season after season, hungry for the next drilled hole, the next sonar reading, the next unsettling discovery. For Duane, the search was never a metaphor. He believed the treasure was down there, and he meant to find it.
He leaves behind a property still tangled in mystery, a television franchise that has outlived his on-screen tenure, and a son whose own future remains uncertain. The cavern doors, in a sense, never closed. They just outlasted the man who spent his final years trying to pry them open.
