Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama appeared together on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, marking their first joint network television interview in nearly a decade and pushing back against persistent divorce rumors that have swirled around the couple for months.
The couple sat down with host Robin Roberts to promote the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, discussing their shared history in the city and their vision for the future of the new institution.
The interview represented the Obamas’ first joint appearance on network television since they left the White House in January 2017, coming following extensive internet discussion regarding their 33-year relationship.
Divorce rumors first gained traction when Michelle Obama was conspicuously absent from former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral in January. She also skipped President Donald Trump’s inauguration and made a series of solo public appearances that set social media ablaze with speculation about marital trouble.
Michelle Obama addressed the rumors directly in May 2026 during an appearance on actress Sophia Bush’s podcast Work in Progress, saying people “couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself” without assuming the marriage was in trouble.
Barack Obama had twice attempted to publicly dispel the speculation before the Good Morning America interview. He posted a photo of the pair holding hands on Michelle’s birthday and shared a Valentine’s Day selfie with the caption: “Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away.”
Body language expert Judi James, a regular television commentator and author of 26 books including the Body Language Bible, analyzed the couple’s appearance for The U.S. Sun.
James noted that the Obamas’ body language was notable precisely for what it was not. The couple avoided the overtly affectionate displays that many celebrities and politicians employ when facing relationship speculation, she said.
“They’re not your celebrity show ponies,” James said, adding that the couple appeared relaxed rather than performing for the cameras.
What James did observe, she described as “almost a minor miracle” for such a long-standing marriage. James noted how the couple mirrored each other’s movements and listened attentively when the other spoke.
The Obamas also addressed the divorce rumors with humor during a separate appearance on the IMO podcast, which Michelle Obama co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson. The episode aired on July 17, 2025, and featured Barack Obama as a surprise guest. Robinson kicked off the conversation by asking playfully, “Wait, you two like each other?”
“It’s my husband, y’all,” Michelle responded as Barack entered. He joked in return, “She took me back! … It was touch and go for a while.”
When Robinson commented that it was nice to have them both in the same room together, Michelle quipped, “I know, because when we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.”
James noted that despite the lighthearted exchange, Michelle Obama’s body language suggested some discomfort when the rumors came up.
James said neither appeared particularly comfortable discussing the speculation, and that Michelle rubbed her thighs and positioned her feet awkwardly.
According to James, Barack seemed less aware of the gossip’s extent while Michelle appeared more focused on confronting it directly, with facial expressions suggesting frustration at needing to address it publicly. Michelle’s raised brows and head movements when questioning why people couldn’t accept their relationship suggested inner anger, James said.
James described the interaction as “primarily friendly and professional,” noting Barack hugged both Michelle and Robinson but displayed limited intimate gestures beyond brief hand-holding.
Still, James emphasized the authentic connection she observed during the Good Morning America interview. The couple demonstrated remarkable synchronization, with each partner stopping to listen attentively when the other spoke—a rarity in long-term relationships, according to the expert. They even spoke the same words simultaneously at points during the conversation, including the phrase “construction site.”
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center represents a new chapter for the couple as they continue their post-White House lives in Chicago. The center will serve as both a museum and community gathering space, cementing the Obamas’ legacy in the city where their relationship and political careers began.
While the divorce rumors have generated significant attention on social media and in tabloid coverage, the Obamas’ recent public appearances suggest they are committed to addressing the speculation directly—albeit with their characteristic blend of humor and dignity—rather than letting it fester unanswered.
