Dave Kendall, the British music journalist who transformed a late-night video program into a proving ground for alternative rock and helped introduce a generation of listeners to bands that would define the era, has died at age 68. MTV and Matt Pinfield, a DJ who previously hosted MTV programs, both confirmed his passing, with Pinfield sharing the news in an emotional Instagram post on July 14. A cause of death was not immediately available.

Kendall was best known as the creator and longtime host of MTV’s “120 Minutes,” which provided a platform for unconventional artists during an era when MTV’s daytime programming seldom featured such acts. The show became a Sunday-night ritual for young fans who stayed up past midnight to catch videos that never aired in daylight.

MTV paid tribute to Kendall in a social media post, calling him a tastemaker whose passion for the genre helped turn the network into a destination for alternative music. The network wrote that his impact on music would not be forgotten.

From Newsrooms to MTV

Earlier in his career, Kendall worked as a journalist and editor, contributing artist profiles and music criticism to publications on both sides of the Atlantic, such as Melody Maker, Spin and the New York Post. Following his move from England to New York, MTV brought him on to develop “120 Minutes” from the ground up.

The show premiered in March 1986, the same year Kendall joined the network. Over seven years there, he worked as a writer, producer, presenter, and news reporter. As host of “120 Minutes” from 1988 to 1991, he championed acts that would go on to enormous fame, and he stayed with the program until 1992.

The late-night slot gave Kendall room to spotlight performers including Kate Bush, The Ramones, Morrissey, Kitchens of Distinction and Hüsker Dü. In September 1991, the program hosted the premiere of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a single that would come to epitomize the grunge movement and pull alternative music into the mainstream.

A Show That Outlasted Its Hosts

Kendall’s departure did not end the program. Pinfield hosted “120 Minutes” from 1995 to 1999, and the show later passed to VJs including Lewis Largent and Jim Shearer before being canceled in 2003. Shearer was the host when its original run ended.

Pinfield called Kendall one of the true believers who introduced listeners to bands that defined an era and gave a home to music that deserved to be heard.

Shearer told Rolling Stone that Kendall cared deeply about music and that his idea to create the program helped shape a memorable era. Shearer said he had predicted years earlier that Kendall’s and Pinfield’s names would always be tied to “120 Minutes” whenever it was discussed in the past tense — a forecast that, more than two decades later, had held.

A Global Second Act

Kendall’s work extended well beyond his signature show. He hosted and co-produced the nationally syndicated talk program “Music Scoupe,” anchored the “Woodstock ’94” pay-per-view broadcast and fronted the internationally simulcast 1994 concert “Soccer Rocks the Globe.” His radio résumé included hosting “Planet Traxx” on New York’s Hot 97 and serving as host for the syndicated shows “Left of the Dial” and “Cross Currents.” In a return to his musical roots, he later hosted “Party 360 with Dave Kendall” on Sirius Satellite Radio.

He also worked as a club DJ, holding a seven-year residency at New York’s Limelight and playing other venues. He released the mix album “A Voyage Into Trance, Volume 2” through Hypnotic/Cleopatra Records in 2001. In the 90s, he took on a range of internet projects, and he spent time in content development at Soundbreak.

Kendall moved to Thailand in the mid-2000s, according to Rolling Stone, and later lived in Hong Kong and Shanghai. His website credits him with hosting and producing the travel show “Destination Thailand.” Beginning in 2017, he wrote and edited stories for the Bangkok Post, where he also produced and anchored podcasts.

The response to his death underscored how personal the show felt to its audience. Fans flooded the comments of Pinfield’s post with memories of taping episodes on VHS and discovering bands they might otherwise never have heard. One director recalled walking a tape of his first music video up to Kendall’s office as an 18-year-old MTV employee, only to have the host slot it into the show. For countless viewers who came of age musically in the 80s and 90s, Kendall’s late-night hour was where the future arrived first.
