A July 10 reunion between King Charles and his son Prince Harry did not take place behind closed doors with just the two men present. Queen Camilla sat alongside the 77-year-old monarch throughout the encounter at Highgrove House, where Harry arrived with Meghan Markle and their two young children after years of bitter public discord. Royal biographer Robert Jobson, who penned “The Windsor Legacy,” says the arrangement was deliberate.
According to Jobson, the queen’s role was “to make sure that everything was witnessed.” He explained in comments reported July 21 that her attendance served as insurance should an alternative version of events surface later in interviews, documentaries or books.
Charles, who continues treatment for cancer, is not the first royal to insist on company during sensitive family conversations. His late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, reportedly would not accept telephone calls from the 41-year-old prince unless someone else listened in. She also blocked Harry and Markle, who hoped to document the occasion, from bringing a photographer when they introduced her to Princess Lilibet, the great-granddaughter named in her honor, in June 2022.
Years of Public Allegations Fuel Distrust
The need for such safeguards stems from a string of disclosures the Sussexes have made since stepping back from official duties in 2020. Their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the 2022 Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan,” and Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare” all contained pointed accusations about royal family members. Jobson said the king wanted time with his grandchildren but required protection against future revelations.
Prince Archie, now seven, and Lilibet had not seen Charles or Camilla since Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022, four years before the Highgrove visit. The king attended Archie’s christening at Windsor Castle on July 6, 2019. Harry and Markle returned to the U.K. for the late queen’s funeral in September 2022 but had minimal contact with the extended family.
No images or official readout emerged from the private gathering. The only people aware of what transpired, Jobson noted, “were inside the room.” Whether the Sussexes will eventually disclose their own account is unknown.
Stepmother as Shield
Harry has been openly antagonistic toward Camilla. In “Spare,” he claimed that he and Prince William both pleaded with their father not to go through with the marriage. He also wrote that she “sacrificed me on her personal PR altar,” alleging she fed stories to journalists to rehabilitate her reputation ahead of assuming the title of queen consort.
Jobson described Camilla as a steadfast partner who has absorbed relentless criticism, including portrayals as a wicked stepmother. He suggested her attendance kept Charles from making unwise concessions, particularly amid rumors the Sussexes hope to resume some connection to royal duties and increase their presence in Britain.
Tense Lead-Up to Family Meeting
The days preceding the reunion were contentious. Harry lost a legal battle with Associated Newspapers and found himself without lodging at Buckingham Palace. His representative stated publicly that the invitation had been withdrawn; palace sources countered that he had not responded by the deadline and accepted too late for staff to prepare accommodations.
Despite security worries, Meghan followed with the children from their summer holiday in Portugal, joining Harry for the encounter. While in the country, he stopped at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to visit patients and participated in wheelchair rugby at the “One Year to Go” event promoting the Birmingham Invictus Games 2027.
At a Time 100 event on July 16, attendees heard Harry mention that his father is doing well. Buckingham Palace made Charles’ cancer diagnosis public in 2024, and in December 2025 the king announced his treatment regimen would lighten in 2026 thanks to early detection and successful therapy.
The substance of the Highgrove conversation has not been disclosed. But by keeping Camilla beside him, the king has ensured any future recounting will include her perspective — not just the Sussexes’ version alone.
