Pope Leo’s Message Stuns Trump Supporters

Pope Leo XIV used a nationally televised interview in the United States to extol the nation’s historic embrace of immigrants, delivering remarks that stood in stark opposition to the restrictive border policies championed by the Trump White House. The 70-year-old pontiff, who became the first American to lead the Catholic Church, offered his views in a conversation with NBC anchor Tom Llamas that broadcast on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Speaking from the Borgo Laudato Si’ papal gardens near Rome, Leo responded to a question about what he cherishes most about his homeland by emphasizing America’s tradition of welcoming people from across the globe. The pope highlighted the country’s foundational values of freedom and opportunity, celebrating its generations-long practice of “having invited for generations people from around the world to be part of America.” The timing carried unmistakable significance, given the administration’s focus on curtailing migration.

From Chicago to the Vatican

The Chicago native rooted his perspective in personal experience, citing genealogical research from last year that traced his family history. “I come from a family that—my grandparents were immigrants. On my mother’s side, we have people who were both slaves and slave owners,” he explained. That heritage, the pontiff suggested, allows him to appreciate what he views as among the country’s most precious strengths—a diversity he vowed to continue championing.

While NBC’s Lester Holt had previously met with Leo during a global media gathering last year, this week’s sit-down represented his debut interview with an American television network since his historic election to the papacy.

Escalating Friction Between Rome and Washington

The broadcast came amid an ongoing public dispute between the religious leader and the administration. President Donald Trump has attacked the pope as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” Vice President JD Vance, who became Catholic as an adult, has also taken aim at Leo’s theological positions. The pontiff, meanwhile, has characterized the White House’s approach to migration as “inhuman.”

Leo has refused to back down from that criticism. Responding to Trump’s attacks, the pope said he harbors no fear of the administration and remains committed to proclaiming what he described as the gospel’s core teachings.

A July 4 Message From Lampedusa

The ideological clash manifested not just in rhetoric but in scheduling decisions. The White House had invited the pope to join America’s 250th anniversary commemoration in Washington. Instead, the Vatican revealed that Leo would mark the occasion by visiting Lampedusa, Italy, a Mediterranean island that serves as the initial landing point for countless migrants attempting the perilous sea voyage from Africa.

On July 4, 2026, the pontiff participated in a procession and celebrated Holy Mass there. Father Antonio Spadaro, undersecretary at the Vatican office responsible for culture and education, characterized the visit as intentional. Spadaro portrayed it as an American pope choosing on his nation’s birthday to stand not at its borders but at what he termed the wounded threshold of the Mediterranean—a decision that functioned as an unofficial declaration.

According to Spadaro, the journey represented a response to a moment when the United States had elevated the closing of doors to migrants as a priority, something an American pontiff grasped intimately. Rather than direct confrontation, Spadaro argued, Leo offers a reminder that the dignity bestowed by God on every human being transcends national boundaries.

The pope had articulated similar convictions in a written message to the United States before the milestone anniversary. That letter framed the question in theological language, contending that safeguarding human life demands that nations receive, shelter and support those seeking refuge across borders. He maintained that extending kindness and openness to migrants honors the intrinsic value of each person.

Collectively, the NBC interview, the anniversary correspondence and the Lampedusa pilgrimage illustrate a unified position from the Vatican—responding to the administration’s enforcement measures not through direct confrontation but through persistent emphasis on the moral obligations owed to migrants. For a pontiff who shares citizenship with the president, disagreement over the meaning of American identity has emerged as a prominent point of tension between Rome and Washington.
