Soccer Star Dies in Accident at 44

Gabriel Muresan, a former Romanian international midfielder who captained CFR Cluj through some of the club’s most celebrated European nights, died July 8, 2026, after drowning in a lake near Apold, the Transylvanian town where he served as mayor. He was 44.

Firefighters pulled Muresan from the water and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but medical staff were unable to revive him. Early reports indicated that thermal shock upon entering the water may have contributed to the tragedy, though no official cause of death had been confirmed as of July 9, 2026.

Mureș County Police confirmed a criminal case had been opened on charges of involuntary manslaughter, standard procedure in Romania for establishing the exact circumstances of an accidental death.

From Cluj to the Champions League Stage

Muresan built his reputation during a six-season stint with CFR Cluj between 2007 and 2013, a period during which he made more than 130 appearances and established himself as one of the most dependable midfielders in Romanian football. He captained the side as they lifted three Liga I titles, in 2008, 2010, and 2012, along with three Romanian Cup trophies.

The peak of his club career came on the European stage, where Cluj competed in three UEFA Champions League group-stage campaigns. Muresan featured in matches against some of the continent’s most storied clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and AS Roma. The clash with Manchester United came in December 2012, placing him on the same field as some of the game’s biggest names.

Internationally, Muresan earned nine caps for Romania between 2007 and 2011, featuring in qualifying matches for both the World Cup and Euro 2012. Among his opponents on the national stage were France and Brazil, testaments to the level at which he competed during that stretch of his career.

Career Path and Later Years

Muresan spent his entire playing career in Romania, except a spell at Russian side Tom Tomsk. Before arriving at Cluj, he turned out for Dealul Mare Sighișoara, Gloria Bistrita, Mobila Sovata, and Gaz Metan Medias. After leaving Cluj in 2013, he went on to represent ASA Târgu Mureș before hanging up his boots in 2017.

His playing days were not without controversy. In November 2014, Muresan received an unprecedented 16-match domestic ban after being found guilty of using his elbow to break the cheekbone of Steaua Bucharest forward Raul Rusescu. The incident was serious enough that Rusescu came close to losing sight in one eye.

Following his retirement, Muresan transitioned into public life, entering local politics and eventually winning the mayoral election in Apold. He had served as mayor of Apold since 2020 and was re-elected by a huge majority two years ago, reflecting a genuine connection with the community he had made his home in.

A Community Mourns Its Mayor

The town’s local authority announced his death on social media, describing him as someone who dedicated himself to the residents and stating that the community was experiencing great pain at the news of his passing.

Officials went on to say the town would honor his legacy and extend heartfelt condolences to his family and all those who cherished him, adding that his contributions to the people of Apold would never be forgotten.

The Romanian Football Federation also issued a formal statement expressing grief over his passing, offering condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) joined the tributes, saying on behalf of the wider European football community that it was saddened by his death and extending its condolences to his loved ones.

Tributes Pour In Across Football

Reaction to his death spread quickly across the football world on July 9, 2026, with UEFA calling his six years captaining Cluj a career that left a genuine mark on Romanian football.

For the residents of Apold, the loss carries a different weight. Muresan was not just a former soccer star who had settled in their community — he was their elected leader, a man who chose public service after the final whistle of his playing days. His town hall’s tribute captured that duality, honoring him as both a footballer the country celebrated and a mayor the commune depended on.

Mureșan was laid to rest on July 12 in Apold, following a funeral service attended by hundreds of mourners, including dozens of fellow mayors who wore the Romanian tricolor in tribute. Former CFR Cluj teammate Eugen Trică delivered an emotional eulogy, calling Mureșan “a great man, a great character and a champion.”
