Beloved Rock Star Dies at 83

Dick Parry, the saxophonist whose soulful contributions to Pink Floyd’s greatest recordings made him instantly recognizable to millions of listeners, left behind an estate worth £50,741 — probate documents disclosed August 7, 2026. The figure represents a tiny fraction of the wealth amassed by the band’s core members, despite his instrumental role in shaping their signature sound across multiple decades.

The probate filing showed Parry’s gross estate totaled £53,341 before settling at the net amount. Born in Kentford, Suffolk, in 1942, Parry died on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 83 years old without leaving a will. He married and divorced three times — his first marriage to Gwen produced two children, while a third child came from his union with third wife Millie.

By comparison, Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour held a fortune estimated at £115 million according to The Sunday Times Rich List in 2018. Though never an official band member, Parry’s artistry helped create music that generated staggering commercial success — rewards he never personally saw reflected in financial terms.

Teenage Bonds in Cambridge

Long before stadium tours and platinum albums, Parry and Gilmour forged their musical partnership as teenagers performing in local Cambridge bands. On May 22, 2026, Gilmour posted a social media remembrance alongside a 1963 photograph showing the pair entertaining young cinema audiences in Cambridge. “Since I was seventeen, I have played in bands with Dick on saxophone, including Pink Floyd,” Gilmour wrote. The guitarist joined Pink Floyd in early 1968, initially as a fifth member alongside founding guitarist Syd Barrett, who left the band a few months later.

Between 1973 and 1977, Parry toured alongside the band during their commercial and artistic zenith. His saxophone defined essential moments on “The Dark Side of the Moon” from 1973, including the tracks “Money” and “Us and Them,” as well as “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” from 1975’s “Wish You Were Here.” The single “Money” reached the 13th position on the Billboard Hot 100 during 1973, and “The Dark Side of the Moon” topped the Billboard 200 for one week that year. “Wish You Were Here” held the Billboard 200’s summit for a fortnight in 1975.

Beyond Session Work

Though lacking official membership status, Parry commanded respect from insiders as something far beyond a contract musician. Gilmour praised his distinctive feel and immediately identifiable tone. Dedicated followers knew him for his striking stage practice of wearing two saxophones at once, seamlessly transitioning from baritone to tenor mid-solo during performances of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.”

His work extended to “The Division Bell,” the 1994 release that followed the rift between Gilmour and bassist Roger Waters, where he contributed to “Wearing the Inside Out.” Gilmour recalled receiving a holiday card from Parry, who had sold off his instruments and taken up work as a farrier before abandoning that profession as well. Gilmour arranged an audition aboard a boat with producer Bob Ezrin, and after hearing just a handful of notes, both men instantly agreed to bring him aboard.

Parry took the stage at the Live 8 charity event in 2005 — an occasion Gilmour characterized as the band’s singular complete reunion — and participated in Gilmour’s On An Island Tour during 2006, which featured the late Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright. Beyond the Pink Floyd universe, his collaborations included guitarist Rory Gallagher, the Who’s bassist John Entwistle, and blues artist Lightnin’ Slim.

Industry Mourning

Gilmour’s May 22, 2026, social media announcement of Parry’s passing prompted immediate responses from the music community. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Graham Nash expressed condolences, while industry executive Merck Mercuriadis voiced gratitude for his body of work. In a December 2024 birthday greeting, Gilmour had already publicly called Parry “one of my oldest friends.”

Artistic Wealth Versus Financial Reality

The modest estate value may startle anyone familiar with decades of his saxophone performances. Pink Floyd’s commercially dominant albums created vast fortunes — distributed overwhelmingly to official band members rather than collaborators like Parry. His artistic contributions vastly exceeded any monetary compensation he received.

No probate document can quantify the true scope of his influence. Across more than 40 years working alongside Gilmour and Pink Floyd, Parry crafted instrumental passages that reached audiences worldwide. His saxophone lines on “Money,” “Us and Them,” and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” remain as essential to those compositions as any other element — an artistic inheritance completely divorced from estate valuations.
