A Bell 206 helicopter carrying British newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert crashed and burst into flames on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, August 17, 2026, killing both passengers and the pilot, Giorgos Raikos. Investigators suspect a tail rotor malfunction caused the aircraft to spin out of control moments before its scheduled landing at approximately 6:20 p.m. local time.
Raikos, 55, a former air force aviator and father of three who had been hired two months earlier, was piloting the private air taxi when it went down near the Tholos area around 6:15 p.m. The crash occurred approximately 50 meters from residential buildings and close to the Monastery of Panagia Vrysiani, triggering alarms that echoed across the island. Emergency crews confirmed all three occupants dead at the scene.
Greece’s civil aviation authority has temporarily grounded the entire Bell 206 fleet while examining evidence of a possible tail rotor performance issue. CCTV footage shows the helicopter rotating erratically and plummeting rapidly before impact, followed immediately by a fire that consumed the wreckage.
Witnesses Describe Unusual Sounds Before Impact
Residents near the crash site reported hearing strange noises in the moments before the aircraft struck the ground. Manolis Fountoulakis, the deputy mayor of Sifnos, relayed witness accounts: “It experienced mechanical failure in the air, residents say it made a loud, strange noise, like military aircraft.”
The helicopter had departed from Markopoulo, a village southeast of Athens, carrying the couple who chose the flight to avoid a ferry trip lasting up to five hours. Two firefighters with a single fire engine responded to the dry, sloped terrain as flames consumed the debris, and emergency personnel from Syros later arrived by the Fire Department’s RAFNAR speedboat. A thick column of dark smoke rose from the site as responders fought the blaze.
Victims Remembered by Global Employers
Bristol-born Cromie, 31, worked as vice president of private wealth solutions at Blackstone’s London office, a position he held for four years. The University of Sheffield economics graduate had previously worked at NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, and BNP Paribas before joining the U.S.-based investment management firm.
Ebert, 30, was born in London and served as a senior specialist in market reputation at Bain & Company, a member of the consulting industry’s “Big Three.” The University of Exeter graduate spoke fluent German and had worked in asset management, private equity, and consulting, including a position at Coller Capital prior to her July 2025 start at Bain. She documented trips to Caribbean islands, the French Riviera, and northern Italy’s scenic lakes on her social media accounts.
Bain & Company confirmed that Ebert was a “much-loved and deeply respected member of our London team.” A Bain spokesperson said the firm was heartbroken and supporting her family and colleagues while extending sympathy to Cromie’s relatives and Raikos’ loved ones.
A Blackstone spokesperson said: “We are shocked by the tragic passing of three people including our colleague Alex Cromie and his wife Marie Ebert, who were celebrating their honeymoon.”
Greek authorities continue examining all available evidence, including the surveillance footage capturing the aircraft’s final erratic moments, to establish the precise sequence of events. The intensity and speed of the fire left no possibility of survival. Authorities have informed the relatives of all three deceased, and officials in Greece have offered their sympathies to those grieving the loss of the newlyweds and the veteran aviator.
