Acclaimed Musician Found Dead at 54

Police in Sri Lanka are investigating the death of Thomas Crawford, a British musician whose body was found on the afternoon of August 16, 2026, in the upper courtyard of a Buddhist temple at Thihagoda, a rural town in the country’s south.

Crawford, a singer and guitarist born in Glasgow, was 54. The body was spotted by temple-goers who had arrived that afternoon for religious observances, and they alerted police, who traveled out to the remote site in Southern Province. One early account named Mahindagiri Temple as the location of the discovery and gave his age as 52.

What Officers Found at the Temple

Left behind at the scene were a scooter and a motorcycle helmet. A check of the scooter’s registration showed the machine had been hired in a neighboring town earlier the same day, which suggests Crawford rode it to the temple himself.

Inquiries into the death are continuing, Thihagoda police have said, though they believe there are no suspicious circumstances involved. A cause of death has not been made public.

He Set Off From the Coast That Morning

Weligama, a popular surf town roughly an hour’s journey from the temple, was where Crawford had been living, at a beachfront property called Sugar Co-Living. Facing the Indian Ocean, the place caters to long-stay visitors and remote workers who settle on the island’s southern coast for weeks or months at a time.

Hambantota was the destination he named to staff as he left the property on the morning of his death — the coastal city that was among the areas worst affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Along the way he stopped at the temple, which lies inland from the main coastal route.

Tourists rarely reach the religious site where he was found, in a stretch of the Matara district far better known to Sri Lankans than to visitors.

A Musician Who Made Sri Lanka Home

Sri Lanka had been his home for several years, and he chronicled that life online for friends in Scotland and around the world. He posted clips of himself playing acoustic guitar, photographs of paintings in progress, images from inside a music studio surrounded by instruments, and shots of himself performing with a band beside a swimming pool.

A recent post told followers that he had recorded an album of religious music, “Master of Miracles,” at the very Sugar Co-Living property where he was living. The record came out online this year, credited to him and his band, The Angels. He wrote poetry as well, according to friends, and would speak about his verses with obvious pride.

Praveen Ariyaratne, the man behind Sugar Co-Living, first met Crawford three years earlier, and the two had grown close. Among the first to pay tribute, he said: “Thomas was a very talented and kind person. He was involved in a lot of music, art and charity work.”

Tributes Pour In From Friends Worldwide

The news has left friends in a number of countries reeling. Social media posts have drawn the outline of a man devoted to music, art and charitable causes; the best person, in the words of one mourner.

A hope that he had arrived wherever it was he had been traveling to came from a loved one. Another spoke of a sad heart, and of the laughter the two of them had shared, now missed. Calling the death a big shock, a third mourner said memories of his music would always be treasured.

The language of many messages was shaped by Buddhism, which most Sri Lankans follow and which lies at the heart of the temple where his body was found. One friend, Surangi Dissanayake, remembered a sensitive and kind-hearted man whose nature showed in the way he spoke and behaved.

“I wish from the bottom of my heart that he will be reborn,” Dissanayake said.

The bliss of Nirvana was what another friend, Nadeeka Nirmali, wished for him, along with the wish that in no life to come would his mind be led toward so early a death; the loss, she added, had left them deeply saddened.

Consular Support for the Family

The department was supporting the family of a British national who had died in Sri Lanka, a Foreign Office spokesperson said. In cases like this one, consular staff routinely help relatives with repatriation and act as a link between British families and overseas police forces.

The material investigators have assembled so far remains spare. There is a hired scooter and a helmet; there is a temple courtyard an hour’s ride inland; and there is a trip to Hambantota that was planned but never completed. When their inquiries will conclude, Thihagoda officers have not indicated.
