First Lady Melania Trump used her X account on September 2, 2026, to share photographs of an unusual arrival at the White House: an American race car, slung from a crane, being lowered into the Rose Garden.
The red car carries white stars and the words Fostering the Future along one edge, and in one shot it hangs in midair above the White House. A second image, shot from another angle, catches the car on its way down and reveals a white shark fin on top bearing the same Fostering the Future message, with Freedom 250 Grand Prix spelled out in white lettering along the side. That name salutes America’s recent 250th anniversary.
At least three crew members appear in a final photograph, standing in front of and behind the car as they guided it into place before it was unhooked from the crane.
Melania Trump, 56, said moving a precision racing machine into one of the nation’s most historic settings took careful planning and coordination. They ensured flawless operation, with zero tolerance for error, she wrote in her post. She also said it was the first time an American race car had entered the Rose Garden.
Why the Car Was Craned In
The display marked $2 million in funding from IndyCar and Fox Corporation for Fostering the Future Scholarships, the first lady said. She launched Fostering the Future in 2021, and the program helps young people who have aged out of foster care win scholarships to colleges and universities around the country.
The lettering on the car pointed to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the IndyCar race held in Washington, D.C. Ahead of that race on Sunday, President Donald Trump, 80, and the first lady took a lap around the track in the presidential limousine.
The garden that took delivery of the car looks nothing like the space it replaced. Crews rebuilt it entirely last summer — among the most visible of the changes on a White House campus that the current administration has kept in near-constant construction.
A Building Spree Approaching $900 Million
The photo op landed as Trump pushes ahead with a long list of alterations inside and outside the executive mansion. A review of records puts the estimated price tag of the construction projects at $900 million or more, and the most ambitious of them is a proposed ballroom measuring 90,000 square feet. The White House announced that ballroom in July 2025, with work set to begin that September, and initially put the cost at $200 million; by August 2026, reporting attributed to The Washington Post said the building work could take the cost to more than $900 million.
The East Wing was demolished for the ballroom, and Trump later conceded it did not need to be knocked down.
Trump has also announced plans, as part of the ballroom work, for the White House roof to serve as a “DronePort.” “The entire roof is developed for military. Not only is it drone-proof – if a drone hits it, it bounces off, it won’t have any impact – but it’s also meant as a drone port so it protects all of Washington,” he said. He also said it would house “the greatest drone empire you’ve ever seen.”
A far smaller but decidedly more exclusive amenity sits on the list as well. Reporting this week indicated that Trump intends to upgrade the White House’s private two-lane bowling alley. Public contract awards show the General Services Administration (GSA) awarded more than $250,000 to the contractor Charles Mann Enterprises, with support from Trump’s Executive Office.
Lighting work at the two-lane Harry S. Truman Bowling Alley accounts for nearly $250,000 of that money. Another $8,800 is set aside for escort services — the staffing required to accompany outside workers as they move through secure areas of the complex.
The Contractor Behind the Work
Former NFL player Charles Mann founded the firm handling that job, a construction management company based in Washington. It has picked up other work tied to the White House campus, including a separate $878,000 contract awarded on August 18 for a studio project in the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB).
The alley sits in that same EEOB basement, though whether the $878,000 studio contract has any connection to the alley upgrades is not clear. Public contracting records list the two awards separately.
Still other proposals remain on the table, among them a new visitor screening center put forward by the Secret Service and the National Park Service, along with an attempt to revamp the Reflecting Pool that has been described as “disastrous.” The ballroom, the screening facility, the lighting job at the bowling alley and the assorted interior and exterior work make up much of the roughly $900 million identified in the records reviewed so far.
A Rose Garden Photo Op With a Purpose
The crane operation answered a narrower purpose for the first lady than the hard-hat work underway elsewhere on the property. Her post framed the car’s arrival as a celebration of the scholarship money committed by IndyCar and Fox Corporation, linking a piece of American motorsport hardware to a program aimed at helping young people who came out of the foster care system pay for college.
It also produced a striking set of images: a racing machine suspended in midair above the White House, then settling onto a garden rebuilt only last summer. She did not say in her post whether the car stays on display or was a short-term installation.
She emphasized the logistics instead. Between the crane, the ground crew and the security perimeter that surrounds every square foot of the complex, the operation demanded the kind of choreography more often associated with a pit lane than with a presidential garden.
