A delivery driver working for Amazon was discovered unresponsive in the cargo area of her vehicle Aug. 11, 2026, in Fruitland Park, Florida, following reports from a nearby homeowner who noticed the idling van remained parked and unmoved for several hours — prompting emergency personnel to don protective equipment amid concerns about hazardous fumes.
Patrick Miranda, whose property on Clark Road sits near where the truck was stationed, contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office via its non-emergency line at approximately 7:22 p.m. According to Miranda, he grew concerned after observing no movement from the vehicle despite clear indications someone had been inside. “I see the phone is still plugged in. The backpack is there and again the car is running, but there is no one,” Miranda said. “It seemed kind of strange.”
Deputy Reacts to Fumes at the Scene
When the first deputy arrived and opened the front passenger door, he appeared affected by something emanating from inside the truck, according to Miranda’s account. After opening the rear sliding doors, the officer found the woman unconscious in the back. Miranda observed the deputy stepping away from the vehicle and appearing lightheaded after the exposure. Miranda said uncertainty surrounded what had caused the reaction. “I’m not sure if there were fumes from either the vent, if there’s a package,” he said. “There was a lot of speculation at the time from both the officers and the other people involved.”
Firefighters in Gas Masks, Hazmat Precautions Taken
Lake County Fire Rescue and EMS personnel escalated their response protocols due to fears of toxic contamination. Arriving firefighters wore gas masks, and crews established a perimeter around the delivery truck. Before medical treatment could begin, responders used a fire hose to rinse the woman, removing any potential hazardous materials from her body and clothing.
Miranda’s home surveillance system recorded the emergency response. He described watching as personnel methodically decontaminated the victim before shifting to lifesaving measures. Fire rescue teams spent multiple hours at the location, apparently examining and cleaning the interior of the van.
Lake County Fire Rescue and EMS transported the woman to a hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead. Officials have withheld her identity. The sheriff’s office confirmed the case is under active investigation.
Cause of Death Remains Undetermined
Investigators have not established what killed the driver. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau is handling the inquiry. “Detectives with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau are continuing to investigate this incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Whether toxic gases, hazardous cargo or some other element contributed to the woman’s death remains a key question. Miranda’s surveillance recording provides investigators with documentation of how first responders handled the scene. Authorities have released no information about what packages or materials were being transported in the vehicle.
Amazon released a statement offering sympathy following the death. The corporation said it is working closely with investigators and that its thoughts are with the driver’s loved ones during this challenging period.
Officials have not provided a timeframe for when additional information will be made public. The investigation continues.
