CNN Stunned By Public’s Response to Trump

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten warned on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, that President Donald Trump’s war with Iran is metastasizing into a political catastrophe for Republicans, with polling that he described as a stunning collapse across the very groups that delivered the White House in 2024.

Speaking on CNN’s “News Central,” Enten pointed to what he called the clearest warning sign yet: support for Trump’s Iran policy among the most engaged voters has dropped sharply over two years, with CNN/SSRS polling showing approval declining by 24 percentage points. Enten called it “a giant fall.” The 24-point drop reverses what had been one of Trump’s strongest assets heading into the last election.

The conflict, launched without congressional authorization, has coincided with gasoline prices climbing from roughly $3 a gallon to more than $4, pinching household budgets at a moment when many voters expected relief. Trump had campaigned in 2024 on two central promises: lowering costs and avoiding new wars. According to Enten, Trump’s previous advantage with highly motivated voters has turned into a serious liability, as these voters believe he failed to keep key campaign commitments.

A Base That Walked Away

The erosion runs deepest among the working-class voters who built the movement. During a Friday appearance, Enten highlighted a Marquette University Law School poll showing Trump’s net favorability among non-college adults at plus-six points in October 2024, only to sink to minus-22 in the latest July data. “Down we go into the Atlantic Ocean,” he told host John Berman.

Enten’s aggregate of several polls painted an even starker picture. Trump carried non-college voters by 13 points in 2024, a margin that has flipped to minus-19 in his running average. Enten said the group that Trump built his presidential bid on is shifting away and saying they don’t like MAGA anymore. The reversal, he argued, is why Trump finds himself in such deep trouble, because it is no longer just college-educated voters who have turned against him.

That drift is already reshaping the congressional landscape. Non-college voters favored a Republican-led House by plus-13 points after the 2024 election. Today, that same group tilts toward Democrats by a single point, a swing that Enten said should terrify Republicans running in November.

The GOP’s Security Edge Vanishes

Perhaps the most consequential shift involves national security, long a Republican stronghold. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found the party holding an 18-point advantage over Democrats in January 2025 on managing wars, conflicts and terrorism. That lead has evaporated. Democrats now hold a 2-point edge, a 20-point swing driven largely by the Iran war.

Voters also appear skeptical that the conflict will end well. Only 27 percent of all voters believe the United States will ultimately strike a favorable agreement with Iran, Fox News polling shows, with Republican confidence at 41 percent. Enten said he found the across-the-board figures below 50 percent the most shocking, arguing that Americans simply don’t see what the point of the war is or a way out of it.

He offered a pointed message to Republican candidates who might assume the president’s troubles will not touch them, saying that assumption is mistaken. Enten said Republicans will go down because Trump goes down, describing the two as bound together on this issue.

Warnings and Rebuttals

The White House pushed back on the economic argument. White House spokesperson Kush Desai told the Daily Beast that energy costs had dropped to their earlier baseline following the signing of the administration’s preliminary memorandum of understanding, and predicted inflation would fall again when Trump forces a resolution with Iran. GOP strategist David Winston struck a more cautious note, warning that a Blue Wave becomes possible if Democrats sustain their leads on the economy and post double-digit margins among independents.

Enten suggested the damage extends beyond the midterms to a prize Trump has openly coveted. Citing cash prediction markets, he noted that Trump’s odds of winning the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize had fallen from 33 percent under a year ago to just 4 percent. The Iran war, he said, has dragged those hopes down with it.

The reversal is striking given how recently Enten was cataloging Trump’s political muscle. In July 2026, the president promoted a segment in which the analyst praised his primary dominance, noting that Trump’s endorsement had lifted South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham Nordone from a 14 percent chance of winning her primary to 80 percent, according to the prediction market Kalshi. Graham Nordone, who had never held elected office, was appointed to fill the seat left by her late brother, Lindsey Graham, and has since advanced to a Republican primary runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman.. Enten credited Trump’s near-perfect record in Senate primaries since 2022, when his backing carried candidates to victory in 95 percent of open-seat races.

That command over Republican primaries, however, has not translated into general-election strength. With the midterms approaching in November, the same analyst who once documented Trump’s grip on his party is now tracking how quickly that grip is slipping in the broader electorate.
