A renowned Ozarks musician and craftsperson recognized for handcarving fiddles and performing traditional mountain music died on Aug. 7 at age 109.
Violet Hensley passed away in Arkansas, where she had spent over a century preserving a nearly extinct art form. The City of Leslie confirmed the death through a Facebook announcement, describing her as a treasured figure in state history and an honorary citizen. Officials at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo. — where Hensley worked for more than five decades — also released a statement honoring her extraordinary career.
Born Violet Brumley on October 21, 1916, in Mount Ida, Arkansas, she learned to whittle and play fiddles from her father, George Brumley, who had practiced the craft since 1888. After her mother Nora died young, George raised Violet and her two sisters. He taught his daughter both the physical skill of carving instruments by hand and the musical tradition of playing them.
Decades Away, Then a Return
In 1935, Violet married Adren Hensley. The couple raised nine children together, and she set aside music for 27 years to focus on her family. By 1961, as her children matured, she resumed both whittling and performing.
Her skill as a master luthier eventually attracted national attention. Profiles in National Geographic and features at the Smithsonian Institution brought her story to audiences across the United States and internationally. CBS broadcaster Charles Kuralt showcased her work on his series “On the Road.” Television appearances followed on “The Art Linkletter Show” in 1970, “Captain Kangaroo” in 1977, an Alex Trebek-hosted version of “To Tell the Truth,” and “Live With Regis and Kathy Lee” in the 1990s. In 2004, the Arkansas Arts Council designated her a “Living Treasure.”
A Home at Silver Dollar City
Hensley’s work at the Branson theme park spanned approximately 50 years. She demonstrated fiddle-making techniques and performed for visitors drawn to the attraction’s recreation of an 1800s Ozark village. A park representative said she embodied the soul of an Ozark tradition that connected generations to the region’s heritage.
When the cast of “The Beverly Hillbillies” filmed at Silver Dollar City in 1969, Hensley appeared in the production. She developed a friendship with actress Irene Ryan, who played Granny on the series.
Her recording career produced three albums: “Old Time Fiddle Tunes” in 1974, “The Whittling Fiddler and Family” in 1983, and “Family Treasures” in 2004. The National Fiddler’s Hall of Fame honored her contributions to fiddle music. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut on Aug. 6, 2016, at age 99—a testament to the longevity and productivity of her artistic life. According to a November 2025 profile, she continued crafting and playing fiddles nearly until her death.
Hensley also wrote a memoir in 2014 titled “Whittlin’ and Fiddlin’ My Own Way: The Violet Hensley Story.”
Recognition From Her Community
Though she lived in Yellville, Arkansas, Hensley maintained a strong connection to nearby Leslie, which calls itself the Whittling Capital of America. In 2025, that city proclaimed Violet Hensley Day and awarded her the Key to the City for her lifetime of work preserving whittling and traditional mountain music.
Leslie officials wrote in their Facebook tribute that her warmth and humility made her beloved far beyond her artistic achievements. Her lasting influence will endure in her artistic contributions, musical performances, and the countless people whose lives she touched, they said.
The Loss of Country Music’s Eldest Legend
Hensley’s death leaves a significant gap in country music history. At 102, Western Swing pianist Lucy Dean Record continues performing. Leroy Van Dyke, known for “The Auctioneer” and “Walk On By,” is 96. Singer-songwriter Willie Nelson, who remains one of the genre’s most legendary and long-lasting performers, is 93. Yet not one of them embodied the same direct connection to 19th-century Ozark hand-carved fiddle traditions.
The inheritance Hensley leaves extends from the workshop where her father taught her to whittle to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, unified by a commitment to craft and community that lasted more than a century.
