King Charles III has joined the royal houses of Europe in responding to the disaster on the Nepal-China border, sending a personal message of condolence after catastrophic flooding tore through the mountainous frontier between Nepal and China’s Tibet region on August 26, 2026.

It began high in the Himalayas, where ice and rock gave way and sent a surge of water, mud and debris down onto the communities in the valleys below. Roads, bridges, houses and other infrastructure were torn away, cutting off whole districts and leaving rescue teams struggling to reach them. Rivers burst their banks in the flash flooding, and the thick mud that settled over populated areas entombed homes and slowed the search to a crawl.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority had confirmed 1,003 deaths by Tuesday, September 1, with 3,916 people still missing in Nepal alone, among them 583 foreigners; on the Chinese side, authorities reported 16 dead and 546 missing, bringing the combined toll to 1,019 dead and more than 4,400 missing. The count is still climbing: it stood at 579 on Friday, August 28, and at 359 the day before that. A nationality breakdown of the missing as of August 28 listed 977 Nepalese people, about 658 Chinese citizens and 90 Americans, along with, among others, 55 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 39 from Australia, 33 from Great Britain, 25 from Canada, nine from South Korea and eight each from Singapore, Germany and Russia.

Reporting from near the disaster zone on August 28, Sky News reporter Neville Lazarus gave different figures, saying more than 560 people had died and nearly 2,500 were missing. He described speaking to “a man who had lost 40 of his family members, extended family members,” and said of the wreckage around him: “There were about 450 homes, establishments, and shops, all almost destroyed and devastated.”

About 3,700 people had been rescued as of August 28, Nepali officials said, including people who had been trapped in a tunnel forming part of a hydroelectric project under construction; by September 1 the number rescued across the affected region had passed 11,000. 

The head of delegation for the Red Cross in Nepal, David Fisher, told reporters in Kathmandu that about 93,000 people need support, though he said the estimate was preliminary because some places are reachable only by helicopter and had not yet been visited. He said he was very concerned about the secondary flood, and that Red Cross trucks carrying relief supplies were blocked by a flood-created lake that had breached its banks. The level of a lake formed by the debris, which had threatened to burst, was down by more than 30 feet by Friday, according to Chinese state television, and the danger had eased enough for suspended rescue work to resume. Rain forecast over the next three days could double the lake’s volume again, the water ministry warned.

On the morning of August 28, recovery work in the affected area was halted and excavators withdrawn after a warning from upstream of further flooding, with residents evacuated by the administration, Lazarus said. “As soon as they hear someone shouting that the waters are flowing faster or there’s a rise in the waters, everyone panics, and they run to higher ground,” he said.

The King’s Message, Signed “Charles R.”

The statement, signed “Charles R.,” was released on Thursday, August 27. It came on behalf of the king and Queen Camilla both. “My wife and I are heartbroken to hear of the devastating flooding that has struck the Nepal-China border,” Charles said.

A great many people in Britain, the king said, hold deep, personal connections to that part of the world. His sympathy went to families who have lost loved ones and to those still waiting anxiously for word of friends and relatives. Police officers and Armed Forces personnel had died responding to the disaster, Charles said, and he spoke of their families too; dozens of police, army and armed police personnel appear among the missing on Nepal’s own tally. He praised everyone taking part in the rescue effort and said Britain stood ready to help.

Sympathy From Royal Houses Across Europe

A message of their own from Prince William and Princess Catherine appeared on Instagram stories, signed “W&C.” “The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking,” the couple wrote. Families enduring an unbearable wait for news and communities left with immense loss were in their thoughts, they said, and they offered thanks to the people reaching survivors in dangerous conditions.

From the Netherlands, a joint statement signed by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima went up on the Dutch royal house’s official social media channel, written in English as well as Dutch. The devastating effects of the flooding in Nepal are becoming ever more apparent, the couple said. Many families are mourning or awaiting further news, they added, and their thoughts are with those families and with everyone involved in rescue and relief work.

Speaking for himself, Princess Charlene, their family and the people of Monaco, Prince Albert II of Monaco described his profound sorrow at the catastrophe now unfolding on the border that separates Nepal from Tibet, the Chinese region. He offered condolences to bereaved families along with what he described as full solidarity with the Nepalese people.

A large black car, driven by Charles around the Balmoral estate in Scotland with a security guard in the passenger seat, was photographed once the statement had gone out on Thursday, August 27; the king wore a collared shirt and jacket. Early August marked the start of his stay at Balmoral, and a return to royal duties is expected in early September. Four days before those pictures, on Sunday, August 23, a line of vehicles had carried him to a service at Crathie Kirk along with William and Catherine and their three children, Princess Anne, Sir Tim Laurence, the Duke of Edinburgh and Lady Louise.

Those pictures emerged after a lunchtime landing at Birmingham Airport on August 26 by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who had with them their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. There was no taxpayer-funded close police protection or police convoy — cover they had as working royals — and a private security team accompanied them instead. The couple intends to settle in the United Kingdom for an “extended period,” with the children enrolled in British schools to start in September.

A Caribbean Tour Ahead

Once the summer break ends, the king plans to travel to the Caribbean. Three countries are on the itinerary for Charles this autumn, with Camilla joining him for parts of the tour, and the visit begins October 27 in the Bahamas — one of the 14 nations besides the United Kingdom where he serves as head of state. Guyana follows, in a state visit of his own marking 60 years of bilateral relations between Britain and the South American nation, and then Antigua and Barbuda, where the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting begins November 1 in the capital, St. John’s. As the Commonwealth’s figurehead, Charles presides in a ceremonial role over a 56-member grouping of sovereign states whose membership stretches from Australia, Canada and India to small island states.
