Couple Discovered Dead at Luxury Villa

Foul play has been ruled out by post-mortems on an Irish woman and her New Zealand-born husband found in the hot tub of a rented villa on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, and investigators in Valencia now believe the couple most likely died by accident. The case began on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, when the pair’s teenage children came upon their parents’ naked bodies and ran for help. By then the bodies had lain undiscovered for more than 12 hours. Their children were asleep upstairs; investigators believe the deaths occurred late on the Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday.

A residential property in the municipality of Cullera was where two Irish nationals — a man aged 50 and a woman aged 45 — had been found, according to Spain’s Civil Guard in its first account of the case. That resort town, home to roughly 25,000 people, lies about 25 miles south of the city of Valencia. The account was later corrected. The dead were named as Thomasina Tobin, a 51-year-old Irish national from Castleblayney, County Monaghan, and a Trinity College Dublin graduate. A New Zealand citizen who had lived in Britain for about 26 years, her husband, Patrick Tobin, 48, died alongside her. The family had been staying at Cap Blanc, an upmarket gated development on the town’s coastline, when the children stumbled on the scene.

The teenagers, aged 14 and 16, raised the alarm on the Tuesday afternoon, having called out to their parents from upstairs, got no response and searched the hilltop property room by room. The homeowner was the first person they turned to, and it was he who called emergency services. Responding to that call were Local police employed by Cullera Town Hall, who arrived alongside the Civil Guard; the latter force is leading the investigation.

What Officers Found at the Scene

What the first officers found inside the villa amounted to possible evidence that a crime had taken place — the Civil Guard’s own description — and it was enough for a specialist homicide unit in Valencia to take charge. The spokesperson would not spell out what exactly those officers had seen, saying only that it raised the possibility the pair had not died of natural causes. Nothing had yet been ruled out, the spokesperson said.

One detail in particular has drawn attention. Officers noted the water in the hot tub was unusually cloudy, and a sample went to a specialist laboratory for testing. Such a step is routine, a source close to the investigation said, and the analysis could show, among other things, whether the water contains DNA from a third person.

The couple had injuries consistent with puncture wounds, according to local reports. Investigators cautioned early on that those marks might not point to an assault, and they did not rule out the possibility of some kind of accident in the hot tub. Detectives have since been knocking on doors around the development, asking neighbors about anything that might distinguish an accident from a killing.

A Civil Guard spokesperson said by Wednesday, August 26 that initial reports indicated foul play was not the cause of death, with no visible signs of violence on the bodies. Earlier in the case, Pablo Cea, a spokesman for the Civil Guard in Valencia, had said: “That does not mean this was a homicide.” He added: “It could be an accident — every hypothesis is open for investigation.”

A Gated Enclave Above the Bay

Terraced up the hillside of Faro mountain near Cullera’s lighthouse, the villas and apartments of Cap Blanc mostly face out over the bay and the Mediterranean. Below them, 630 meters of golden sand run through a semi-urban setting. A line of patrol cars pulling in on a summer afternoon goes unnoticed nowhere in a place like that, and the homicide detectives who followed set the enclave talking. Neighbors returning from a day on the sand learned that two people had died a few doors from their own.

Spain’s official tourism website promotes Cullera as a summer resort where a carefully maintained historic quarter sits beside newer leisure complexes designed around sunshine and the shoreline. The understanding is that the family were holidaying at the residential complex, though how long they had been in the area was not immediately clear.

Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, August 25, the bodies were removed from the property. Their destination was the Institute of Legal Medicine in Valencia, where autopsies are to be carried out.

Children Taken to a Hotel in Cullera

Local authorities have made the two siblings their immediate priority. Both are described as traumatized, and neither speaks Spanish. A social worker and a psychologist were sent to Cullera to look after them. Even before their parents’ deaths, the children are said to have had special needs and to have required more support than others their age.

Moved to a hotel in the town, the teenagers were expected to be reunited with family there. Custody of them was taken by three relatives, who flew from Ireland and landed in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, and the children received psychological support.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of the case and providing consular assistance to the Irish citizen concerned. As with all consular matters, it said, it does not discuss the details of individual cases.

Patrick Tobin’s family in New Zealand and the UK are being assisted by New Zealand consular authorities, and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of his death.

Answers May Take Time

Results of the autopsies, which have since been carried out, have not been made public. Sources close to the investigation said the deaths appear to have been accidental, with the villa showing no sign of forced entry. The trigger, investigators now believe, was “a technical failure in the jacuzzi’s suction system” that left Thomasina Tobin “trapped in the water,” according to an August 29 report. The Civil Guard and forensic experts believe Patrick Tobin may have suffered a lethal electric shock while handling the defective installation with his wet body, or when he put his hand into the mechanism to switch it off. Under the same theory, the puncture marks found on at least one of the bodies could date from that attempt to free her. Sources close to the investigation confirmed on August 28 that they are not treating the incident as a crime, but that they still cannot determine exact causes of death, pending post-autopsy tests on blood, urine and tissue samples to be conducted at a specialist laboratory in Barcelona. The cloudy jacuzzi water is also still being analyzed.
