Alphonso Smith Jr., a two-time All-American defensive back at Wake Forest who went on to play four NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions, died on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 40. Wake Forest announced the death on Thursday, September 3, saying it had been informed by Smith’s family, and the school’s release that afternoon did not disclose a cause.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in Florida said in an emailed statement on September 3 that deputies had responded to an address in Pahokee, Smith’s hometown, on Wednesday afternoon in reference to a reported suicide attempt. “An adult male was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” the office said.

Smith appeared to post a message on his Facebook account on Wednesday in which he lamented his mental health, apologized and asked for forgiveness. He apologized to his children in the post and suggested that trauma from his childhood had left him in anguish.

From the Muck to a State Title

Born October 20, 1985, in Pahokee, Smith made his name early as one of the area’s most dynamic two-way players. Lining up at quarterback and defensive back for the Pahokee Blue Devils, he carried the team to a 13-1 season and the Florida Class 2B state championship in 2003. All-state honors followed, along with a runner-up finish for Mr. Football, the state’s player of the year award.

A Record That Still Stands

Smith attended Wake Forest from 2004 to 2008, redshirting as a freshman before developing into one of the most productive ball hawks in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) under Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe. In consecutive seasons he topped NCAA Division I FBS in interceptions, picking off eight passes in 2007 and seven in 2008. He also ran three interceptions back for touchdowns in 2007.

His 21 career interceptions broke a mark set by former North Carolina defensive back Dré Bly and, 18 years on, remain the ACC record more than 15 years later. Smith was a third-team All-American in 2007 and a first-team Associated Press All-American in 2008, when he earned consensus first-team honors, was named a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and collected the second of his two first-team All-ACC selections. He graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in history and was later inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame.

The Broncos Gamble and Detroit

Denver took Smith in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft, 37th overall, after trading its 2010 first-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks to move up. Seattle later used that selection on future All-Pro safety Earl Thomas, and the trade, among other decisions, contributed to the firing of Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels. Smith played 15 games as a rookie in Denver, returning punts and kickoffs.

Shortly before the 2010 season, the Broncos sent him to Detroit in a deal that brought tight end Dan Gronkowski to Denver along with a swap of draft choices. Smith led the Lions with five interceptions that season, including a 42-yard return for a touchdown against the St. Louis Rams, and added three more in 2011. Over two seasons in Detroit he appeared in 33 games with 11 starts, intercepting eight passes and taking two back for scores.

One moment followed him: during a Thanksgiving Day loss to the New England Patriots in 2010, Smith taunted quarterback Tom Brady after an incompletion, and Brady targeted him on three touchdown passes during the Patriots’ ensuing scoring run. Smith publicly apologized to Lions fans afterward.

Detroit released him just before the 2012 season, signed him again later that year and waived him that November after he played four games as a backup. No other NFL team picked him up. His career spanned 2009 to 2012 and 44 games, during which he recorded 88 tackles and eight interceptions, knocked away 19 passes, forced two fumbles and scored twice on defense.

Back Home in Pahokee

When football ended, Smith went home. He became head coach of the Pahokee High School program and served as dean of students, and he later worked on coaching staffs at Moore Haven and at Inlet Grove in Riviera Beach. His tenure leading the Blue Devils ended in 2015; local station CBS12 reported that it followed allegations of inappropriate conduct, without detailing them.

In a town that produces college prospects while wrestling with poverty, Smith framed the sport as a lifeline for the players coming up behind him. “Some of our kids don’t have their father at home and sometimes don’t have the proper nutritional food to eat,” Smith said during a practice at his alma mater, adding that the team turned those hardships into a reason to push rather than an excuse.

His social media profiles in recent years centered on fatherhood. Smith tried to move into content creation professionally and was working as a barber, while continuing to hold free football skills seminars for young players in his community.
