Melania Suddenly Reappears At Trump’s Side

First Lady Melania Trump appeared at President Donald Trump’s side at the Pentagon on Friday, September 11, 2026, for the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks — two days after she skipped the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, where her husband was the headline act.

Melania, 56, and the president, 80, held hands as they descended the stairs to their place on the stage in Arlington, Virginia, and she sat beside him for the service.

The first lady chose a Dior pantsuit in charcoal gray, pairing it with a black blouse and heels of black patent leather; the president wore a blue suit, a white shirt and a red tie. With flags at half-staff, the two bowed their heads during a moment of silence outside the Pentagon.

Tributes in Three States

The ceremony honored the 184 people killed when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon, part of a toll of 2,977 dead in what is considered the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history. Hijackers seized four planes that day: two hit the World Trade Center, a third struck the Pentagon, and the fourth went down in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing 40 people. Tributes were held in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville.

Trump stayed in Washington rather than attend the World Trade Center ceremony in New York, where all of his living presidential predecessors — Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush — were present. Vice President JD Vance traveled to New York instead. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma performed in lower Manhattan as victims’ names were read aloud, some of them by relatives. The service does not permit political speeches. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, took part, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who had urged him not to attend, shook his hand before the event began.

At the Pentagon, Trump called the attacks “true evil” and paid tribute to those killed. “We will honor their lives, we will cherish their beautiful memories, and we will protect this country and its freedoms for every future generation,” Trump said. He then tied the anniversary to his administration’s war against Iran. “We will never, ever forget,” he said. “That’s why we fight today. We don’t have a choice. There can only be victory.” He saluted service members he said were working to ensure that Iran — which he called the world’s number one sponsor of terror — would never have a nuclear weapon.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who spoke shortly before the president, said the country still faces enemies who scheme to kill its citizens, and vowed the United States would finish its fight with Iran. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also addressed the crowd outside the Pentagon, with the first lady seated on one side of the stage and Hegseth on the other.

The Dallas Convention She Missed

The Republican midterm convention ran Wednesday, September 9, and Thursday, September 10, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. With no presidential election in 2026, there was no nominating process; the party promoted the gathering as unprecedented in American political history, and it played out as an outsized campaign rally and fundraiser ahead of the November 3 midterms. Trump spoke both nights, closing with a keynote Thursday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Central Time, and Vance closed out night one. The official program listed 53 items and speakers on the first night and 56 on the second, covering tax cuts, health care affordability, immigration, border policy, trade, domestic manufacturing, taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security.

Empty seats marred the Dallas event, which drew no cable news ratings bump while going up against the opening two games of the NFL season. Several Republicans in the tightest races kept their distance, wary that appearing alongside the president would only energize his detractors. Polls in the run-up to the vote showed Trump’s approval sliding, with the war on Iran and its economic fallout cited among the causes.

Melania Trump stayed in Washington. Her spokesman, Nick Clemens, confirmed she would not attend and gave no reason.

A Selective Public Schedule

On September 9, the convention’s opening day, the first lady spoke from the Rose Garden at the White House Historical Association’s Presidential Sites Summit, addressing architecture, preservation and the part design plays in American history. The building itself has been reshaped during her husband’s second term: the East Wing, which housed the first lady’s office, has been demolished, one of several changes that also include gold gilding in the Oval Office.

Her calendar has been a selective one. Between the July 19 World Cup final and an August 20 event in the Rose Garden, she was not seen in public at all, then reemerged in late August to mark the expansion of her Fostering the Future initiative. She attended only the final night of the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, on July 18, 2024. She also skipped the president’s trip to Ireland, where he met business leaders and attended the Irish Open at his Doonbeg resort; speaking at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Dublin, Trump said his wife was watching and sending her regards, joking that she had passed on the seven-hour flight.

Both are due in North Carolina this week in separate appearances. The first lady is scheduled to visit Ashe County on September 15 to speak about community resiliency and education technology in American schools, her first visit to western North Carolina since January 2025. The president is due September 16 at Gastonia Municipal Airport, in Gaston County, where he will headline a rally boosting Michael Whatley, the Republican running for U.S. Senate.
