A friendly question about Sunday dinners drew a strikingly candid answer from First Lady Melania Trump on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, when she said family time in the Trump household is shrinking — and suggested her 20-year-old son, Barron Trump, does not mind the distance.
The exchange came during an appearance on Fox Business’ “The Big Money Show.” Fox Business co-host Taylor Riggs opened with praise, calling the 56-year-old first lady an inspiration to young mothers trying to run businesses, charities, state dinners and a family at once, then asked whether the Trumps still gather for Sunday night dinners and what advice she would offer mothers who feel stretched thin.
Melania Trump’s answer began with logistics. “It’s good to schedule, right?” she said, adding that everybody is busy these days.
She then widened the frame to her own household, saying her husband sometimes works in the Oval Office until 9:30 at night and that she does not hold dinner for him, because he is busy and so is she. The first lady is believed to spend most of her time in New York City, while President Donald Trump lives separately at the White House.
Her next remark went further. “It’s less and less the family time. It’s suffering because of it,” she said. “But that’s OK. We are here to work, to do a good job, and that’s what matters. And Barron is already a young man, so sometimes he’s maybe even happy that, you know, I just want to do my stuff. And that’s OK.”
A Sharp Contrast With January
The remarks sit oddly beside what she said earlier in the year. In January 2026, she told now-ousted Fox host Maria Bartiromo: “You need to be there for a child nonstop, especially when they need you, especially at that age that Barron is,” she said then. Her son was 19 at the time.
Barron Trump opted last year to move back in with his parents and take classes at the Washington, D.C., academic center of New York University (NYU), rather than remain on the school’s Manhattan campus. That arrangement placed him inside the household his mother now describes as pulled in different directions by work.
Scrutiny Around Barron and the Manosphere
The president’s youngest son has faced criticism this year over how close he appears to be to figures in the controversial “manosphere,” among them Andrew Tate, 39, a suspected rapist and sex trafficker. Earlier reporting said Barron Trump “admired” Tate and spoke with him by phone while being fitted for a suit. Tate himself said in 2024 that he had talked with Barron Trump after the Butler assassination attempt against his father in July 2024.
